BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Behind a two-hit shutout from first-year Addison Moorman, Lehigh blanked Holy Cross 3-0 in their series opener Friday afternoon at Leadership Park. Moorman notched a career high nine strikeouts while Lehigh plated three runs off of just two hits, with the Mountain Hawks benefitting from six walks and four Crusader errors.
Lehigh wins its third straight overall to improve to 19-16. Holy Cross falls to 6-19. Both teams are 2-5 in Patriot League play.
Moorman held the Crusaders without a hit for 4.2 innings before Ava Gambichler singled in the fifth. She then proceeded to strike out Kendall Grady for her third strikeout of the inning and eighth of the game. Moorman froze Bella Nugent on a 3-2 pitch to end the sixth and snared a line drive on a comebacker that turned into a game-ending double play.
Anna Brait singled leading off the seventh for Holy Cross' other hit. Moorman walked one and also hit a batter in her eighth victory of the season.
Lehigh scored single runs in the third and fifth innings without the benefit of a hit. Sophomore Helen Woloshyn scored when classmate Kelly Fricker was caught in a rundown attempting to steal second to give Lehigh a 1-0 lead in the third. Both players initially reached on errors.
In the fifth, the Mountain Hawks loaded the bases on three walks with sophomore Lizzie Kern scoring Woloshyn with a fielder's choice ground ball to shortstop.
Senior Abbey Tabaka laced a single to center field in the fourth for Lehigh's first hit of the day. In the sixth, Fricker singled home first-year Lola Fasano, who reached on a two-base error, to give Lehigh a 3-0 advantage.
Holy Cross' Sophia Roncone allowed three runs (one earned) on two hits over six innings. She walked six and struck out three.
The Mountain Hawks and Crusaders will wrap-up their series with a doubleheader Saturday. Game time for the opener has moved up to 10:30 a.m. due to the threat of rain in the afternoon.
