Season Preview: Men's Golf Excited For Return To Competition

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – It will be a bit of a sprint for the Lehigh men's golf team as the Mountain Hawks prepare to open their spring season this weekend at the Rolling Green Intercollegiate in Springfield, Pa. The Mountain Hawks have not played a competitive tournament since February 2020 and will now compete in four tournaments over four April weekends, plus the annual Presidents' Cup matches with Lafayette, to prepare for the May 1-2 Patriot League Championship at Navy.
The Mountain Hawks were young last season with two seniors and seven freshmen on the roster and will be even younger this year. Head coach Henry D'Alberto begins his 15th season with Owen Quinn back in the fold for a fifth year, but the remainder of the active roster features three sophomores who had their freshman seasons cut short, and three true freshmen.
"A few of the guys came back to campus a little later because they could get more done at home," D'Alberto said. "They've all put the work in, but they haven't competed in a while. It may take us a tournament or two to get our feet under us but our team is very excited. We have some talent and the hope is that we can put it together."
Quinn owns two individual tournament victories for the Mountain Hawks and has been honored academically at the Patriot League level and nationally, but returns with hopes of a strong finish in his final Patriot League Championship.
"I'm excited for Owen to have the opportunity to play this spring," D'Alberto said. "It was obviously very unfortunate what happened last year. Hopefully he can take advantage of the fifth year."
Sophomore left-hander Sam Barton returns after leading Lehigh at two tournaments during the 2019-20 campaign. Classmate David Hurly was a regular in Lehigh's lineup last year. The third active sophomore is Joey Dotta, who played in Lehigh's final three events in 2019-20.
Joining the returning group of four are freshmen Marco Arosemena from Panama, Edmund Broderick from New Jersey and Arthur Gilpin from Massachusetts by way of Hilton Head Prep.
"The freshmen are solid players with good games," D'Alberto said. "The sophomores are almost like freshmen because they didn't get to play the full season; but they've all gotten better. I'm looking forward to seeing some nice things out of them as well."
The 2021 season begins Saturday at the Rolling Green Intercollegiate at Rolling Green Golf Club in Springfield, Pa. Navy will host this year's tournament, which is a one-day, 18-hole event, featuring a 1 p.m. shotgun start. Teams will play in groups of three with three of their own teammates. A 13-team field includes Patriot League members Bucknell, Colgate and Lafayette plus two teams from Navy.
Following the Rolling Green Intercollegiate, Lehigh will play in Villanova's Wildcat Invitational, April 12-13, Lafayette's Abarta Coca-Cola Collegiate Invitational April 18-19 at the Steel Club in Hellertown, and a multi-team event hosted by Bucknell April 24.
The annual Presidents' Cup matches against rival Lafayette will take place Thursday April 22 at Hamilton Farm Golf Club in Gladstone, N.J.
Navy will host the Patriot League Championship, May 1-2 in Annapolis, Md.
"We're playing five straight weekends, plus the Lafayette match," D'Alberto noted. "The good thing is that even though its condensed, everybody is going to have an opportunity to compete multiple times and show their stuff. Hopefully, we can bring a strong six to the Patriot League Championship and have a chance on Sunday going into the final round."
