Lehigh Advances Three To Round of 16 As NCAA Championships Begin

ST. LOUIS – Three of Lehigh's individual champions advanced in the championship bracket to lead the 10-wrestler Lehigh contingent Thursday afternoon at Enterprise Center. Freshman Malyke Hines and seniors Jake Jakobsen and Jordan Wood won bouts Thursday to advance to the round of 16. With bonus wins from Hines and Jakobsen, Lehigh scored six points in session one, tying for 15th place in the field.

Hines was very impressive in an 8-0 major decision over No. 16 seed Devan Turner of Oregon State at 133. He grabbed a single leg right off the opening whistle, finished the takedown and rode out the remaining 2:45 of the opening period. He added takedowns in the second and third periods plus a second period escape and riding time in his NCAA debut. Hines, the No. 17 seed, will next face top seed Daton Fix of Oklahoma State.

Jakobsen's third meeting of the year against Army West Point's JT Brown was the closest yet. The No. 16 and 17 seeds were 1-1 through regulation. Late in sudden victory, Jakobsen was able to gain control in a scramble and picked up a fall at the 7:49 mark to move into the round of 16 at 197 where he will face No. 1 seed Myles Amine of Michigan.

Wood used two takedowns and strong riding from the top position to defeat Nathan Traxler of Stanford 6-1 at 285. The eighth-seeded Wood will next face No. 9 seed Greg Kerkvliet of Penn State in the round of 16.

The only one of Lehigh's EIWA champions to lose in the first round was junior Jaret Lane, who dropped a 6-3 decision to Wisconsin's Eric Barnett at 125. Lane, the No. 14 was tied 3-3 after two periods but a third period takedown and riding time gave Barnett the victory.

Freshman Luca Frinzi was the first Mountain Hawk on the mats, but dropped an 8-2 decision to Wyatt Sheets of Oklahoma State in the pigtail round. He will now wrestle a consolation pigtail against Markus Hartman of Army.

Lehigh's other five qualifiers fell to higher-seeded opposition. Junior Jimmy Hoffman's upset bid at 149 fell a little short as he dropped a 3-2 decision to No. 11 Kanen Storr of Michigan. Hoffman was the aggressor in the third period but couldn't muster the go-ahead score. No points were awarded in a late scramble giving Storr the deciding point on riding time.

Freshman Jake Logan battled undefeated Demetrius Romero of Utah Valley at 174 but despite Logan's best efforts, the No. 2 seed prevailed 9-6.
