SPARKS, Md. – Lehigh men's lacrosse senior Cole Kirst was officially named to the United States' Under-21 roster on Tuesday, a team that will travel to Limerick, Ireland for the Aug. 10-20, 2022 championships. Originally a U19 event, the championship scheduled for 2020 has been postponed twice due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. World Lacrosse has since increased the age grouping to U20 permanently with a one-year exception to U21 for the 2022 championship due to the postponements.

The U.S. had 30 players attend a training weekend in Columbus, Ohio from Nov. 5-7 where it faced competition against North Carolina and Ohio State before making its final roster decisions.

Kirst has been in the process throughout, and impressed every step of the way, as a veteran member of the U.S. team.  The U.S. has won all eight previous men's championships at the U19 age grouping, winning in 1988, 1992, 1996, 2000, 2003, 2008, 2012 and 2016. The next event for the team will be training weekend at USA Lacrosse headquarters in June.

Kirst enjoyed a breakout junior season for Lehigh in 2021, earning All-Patriot League honors. He finished second on the Mountain Hawks in goals (26) and third in points (34), while also adding 18 groundballs and four caused turnovers. Kirst began the season with seven straight multi-goal games and had multiple points in all 12 contests. Kirst twice scored four goals – vs. Army West Point (to earn Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week honors) and at Lafayette (when he added an assist for a career-high five points. Kirst recorded five hat tricks in 2021 after none his first two seasons.
