Navy Scores Game-Winner in 66th Minute to Down Mountain Hawks, 2-1
10/8/2021 11:30:00 PM | Women's Soccer
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Navy broke a 1-1 tie with the go-ahead goal at the 65:00 mark as the Midshipmen downed the Lehigh women's soccer team, 2-1 on Friday evening. The game saw two goals in the game's first 5:17, but just one goal the rest of the way. The loss marks the Mountain Hawks' second in a row as they fall to 4-6-1 overall and 2-2-1 in Patriot League play.
After Navy opened the scoring less than two minutes into the contest, Lehigh quickly answered as senior Courtney Supp headed a corner kick into the back of the net. Classmate Rebecca Van Siclen and sophomore Alex Odle assisted the goal.
In the first half, the Mountain Hawks finished with an 11-5 edge in shots and 3-2 advantage in corner kicks, but couldn't put another one in. Among several golden opportunities, freshman Corinne Lyght fired a hard shot from a dangerous location in the 35th minute, but Navy goalkeeper Mattie Gallagher made the save. Less than a minute later, sophomore Ava Schaller had a great chance down the right side, but her shot sailed just wide.
In the second half, the Mids turned momentum in their favor a bit, posting a 7-2 shots edge. One of those chances gave Navy the lead as a series of throw-ins led to the ball finding the foot of Molly Gillcrist in a prime position in the box. She did the rest, firing inside the left post to make it 2-1 at the 65:00 mark.
Despite numerous downfield rushes looking to pull even, the Mountain Hawks weren't able to fire any shots over the final 25 minutes, as Navy held on for the home victory.
"The game became frantic in the second half with a lot of free kicks and throw-ins," said Lambinus. "That's not the way we want to play. But we couldn't change the game. We couldn't get the ball on the ground, we couldn't win that tackle and we couldn't have that composure to change it. It became up-and-back, corner kicks, throw-ins and free kicks. I think they're better than us in those areas.
"We needed the ball in play more," Lambinus continued. "We let them dictate a little bit too much in the second half. As a coaching staff, we have to come with a better plan to be fresh in the first half, while also fresh and innovative in the second half."
Final shots were 13-12 in favor of Lehigh while Navy held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks. Freshman goalkeeper Abby Trainor finished with four saves across Gallagher, who made six.
"Can we be a team that not only just plays well in the first half, but gets results in the first half? I think we're working towards a team that could do that," said Lambinus. "To be honest, that game should have been 2-1 or 3-1 and if that was the halftime score, it's a completely different game. I thought we played well enough to do that, but we probably expended a lot of energy doing that. We have to be better in the second half."
The Mountain Hawks return home next Wednesday to host Colgate at 6 p.m.

"The first half was good. I thought we started really well, then they went right down on a counter and scored on us," said Lehigh head coach Eric Lambinus. "We responded pretty well to that, but we didn't carry that into the second half."
