Lyght Nets 90th Minute Game-Winner for Thrilling 2-1 Win Over Colgate

Â
"I saw a lot of space," said Lyght. "I was trying to get past the two center backs and it was basically just me and the goalie. We were talking a lot how the goalie is really good at coming out, so I was just trying to keep my composure and slot it in, which I was able to do."
Wednesday also marked Lehigh's second 90th minute over Colgate in the last four seasons, the other being in the 2018 Patriot League Semifinals.Corinne Lyght scores in the final minute for her second of the game, as Lehigh beats Colgate, 2-1. What a play.#SCTop10 | #PLTop3 pic.twitter.com/VbBjpI3R9m

"It's great character to come back after giving up the tying goal," said Lehigh head coach Eric Lambinus. "We asked them to win the key moments, which is the first five minutes of the half, end of the half and after a goal is scored… and I think they did exactly that. We scored both goals in the last five minutes of a half and I thought after [Colgate] scored, we played really well. We turned the game back a little bit and we pushed it.
Â
"A lot of character and a lot of good performances tonight."
Â
The game saw multiple twists and turns. Despite Colgate posting an 11-6 edge in first-half shots, the Mountain Hawks scored the only goal. In the 43rd minute, senior Sydney Staples made a cross into the box where junior Mattie Murphy made a touch over to Lyght. Lyght got herself free enough to fire inside the left post for the 1-0 lead.
Colgate pulled even in the 68th minute as off a turnover, Ally Giovino dribbled towards the box and fired a perfectly-placed shot into the right side of the net. At that point, the Raiders had momentum, firing six of the previous eight shots.Lehigh 1, Colgate 0 at the half following a great 43rd minute goal off the foot of Corinne Lyght!

However, Lehigh turned the tide not long after, which included a number of strong chances – one of which was a Murphy shot from a dangerous position in the 75th minute that sailed wide.
Â
Freshman Abby Trainor made saves in the 81st and 82nd minutes, setting the stage for Ashman finding Lyght for the game-winner in dramatic fashion.
Â
"We have a lot of players who can score goals," said Lambinus. "Everybody's got to be ready to take those opportunities, and Corrine has done a really good job with that. She's dangerous, and she has good speed, composure, explosiveness and soccer IQ. We're happy the ball fell to her and she put it away."
Â
Final shots were 23-16 in favor of Colgate while the Raiders held an 8-4 edge in corner kicks. Trainor finished with six saves, and the first half also featured a big stop from senior defender Erin Keefe, who cleared a ball off the line. Grace Poncsak made six saves for Colgate.
"I think a lot of teams in our league can win the championship this year," said Lambinus. "[Colgate is] absolutely a team that can win it. It was a good battle for us. I'm happy for it, and I hope it puts us in a good position. We've still got to get some more points… still have to keep climbing. We have a huge game on Saturday down at Loyola."A HUGE defensive play earlier in the half was this save on the goal line by Erin Keefe. Wow!
