Lehigh finally opened the 2020-21 season last weekend at No. 13 Pitt. The Mountain Hawks returned to the mat for the first time since March 7, 2020 and despite getting a win by fall from junior Jaret Lane in the opening bout of the season, the 17th-ranked Mountain Hawks fell 24-9 to the Panthers. Lane kicked off Lehigh's campaign by pinning Colton Camacho in the first period. Junior Jimmy Hoffman added a 4-0 decision over Luke Kemerer at 149 to put Lehigh up 9-6, but Pitt won the final six bouts to spoil the Mountain Hawks' opener. Lehigh had five wrestlers make their Mountain Hawk debuts in the dual. Four of Lehigh's losses in the dual were by three points or fewer. A fifth went to overtime. The Mountain Hawks and Panthers also competed in 10 extra bouts that count towards wrestlers' season records. Lehigh wrestlers won four of those extra matches with senior Joe Lobeck (141), freshmen Connor Herceg (165) and Caden Wright (184) and sophomore Eli Jones (285) all winning decisions.

Five Mountain Hawks made their Lehigh debuts in the dual against Pittsburgh. Malyke Hines (133), Connor McGonagle (141) and Jake Logan (174) debuted after deferring eligibility last season, while Thayne Lawrence (165) and JT Davis (184) became the first true freshmen to wrestle in duals for the Mountain Hawks since Jaret Lane and Josh Humphreys did in the 2018-19 season. The last time Lehigh started five freshmen in a dual was Jan. 26, 2018 when deferred freshmen Nick Farro (133), Luke Karam (141), Dylan Ammerman (184), Chris Weiler (197) and Jordan Wood (285) competed in a 20-17 loss at Virginia Tech.  Karam and Wood won their bouts. Five more deferred or true freshmen wrestled their first career official bouts in the extra matches at Pitt: Sheldon Seymour (125), Paul Watkins (149), Tyler Sung (157), Connor Herceg (165) and Caden Wright (184). Herceg and Wright were winners in their Lehigh debuts.

With a lot of the oddities surrounding this 2020-21 season, the national individual rankings remain a bit all over the place. Seniors Brandon Paetzell and Jake Jakobsen are the only two Mountain Hawks in the latest rankings by InterMat and Amateur Wrestling News, but Paetzell has been moved up a weight class to 133. Junior Jimmy Hoffman joins Paetzell and Jakobsen in the FloWrestling rankings. Lehigh has five wrestlers ranked by both The Open Mat and Trackwrestling. Paetzell remains ranked at 125 by The Open Mat, while freshman Malyke Hines cracked the top 33 at 133.

Navy brings a 1-1 record into Saturday's dual. The Midshipmen lost their opener to Pitt but went on the road last weekend to hammer Clarion 41-3. Navy went 8-6 in duals last season, finished fourth at the EIWA Championships and were slated to send five wrestlers to the NCAA Championships.

The Mids are led by two returning EIWA champions who are currently ranked in the top 15 nationally: Cody Trybus (141) and Tanner Skidgel (165). Trybus and Skidgel are the only Navy wrestlers ranked by InterMat and FloWrestling but six other Midshipmen appear in other polls. Casey Cobb is a returning at-large NCAA qualifier at 149. Cary Kolat is in his first season as Navy's head coach.

Navy is Lehigh's second most often-wrestled rival trailing only Penn State. Last year's dual was the 100th in series history. The Mountain Hawks have won the last nine duals in the series to take the lead in the series for the first time. Navy was Lehigh's second-ever opponent in Lehigh's inaugural 1910 season. Lehigh now leads the all-time series 53-47.  Pat Santoro is 11-1 versus the Midshipmen. Last year's 23-9 Lehigh win at Grace Hall was the 200th career dual victory for Santoro.

Saturday's dual begins at 6:30 p.m. from Alumni Hall in Annapolis, Md. The dual will be broadcast on ESPN+.

Lehigh is currently scheduled to wrestle the remainder of the regular season in the friendly confines of Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall, beginning Sunday, January 24 when the Drexel Dragons visit for a 2 p.m. match. Binghamton visits on Saturday, January 30.
