Liam Lynch is at his best when working with people.

That was only reinforced this summer in his time as a sales intern at engineering software company nToplogy.

"nToplogy takes complex geometries and workflows in an engineering software environment and is able to reconstruct and regenerate those in seconds," said Lynch. "Being an application engineer, you could take days designing the same product. If you're working on multiple projects, you're able to create complex designs within minutes or hours versus days or weeks."

Quite simply, nToplogy makes processes quicker and more efficient. Lynch's work over the summer didn't have to do with the nitty gritty engineering aspects of the company, but his role was equally important.

"I worked on the sales team with one of our Lehigh Lacrosse alumni JJ Foley," said Lynch. "He called me in May after they just opened up this internship. Right away, he thought of me. My freshman year, he was a senior; we made a long-lasting relationship and have stayed friends ever since."

What exactly did the position entail?

"I was building a database of leads, or contacts, that we as a team could reach out to and gain recognition in the engineering software world," said Lynch.

Like so many positions in the midst of the pandemic, Lynch's experience was fully remote, but still very rewarding.

"There were options when people could start going back to the office, but as an intern, there wasn't really a need for me to do so," said Lynch. "Every morning, we had a Zoom call. We talked about what we were going to do that day and the following day. We also talked about the accounts we'd be prospecting.

"After the meeting was complete, we reached out to people and tried to get a good conversation going."

Developing conversations, and developing relationships, has been a strong suit of Lynch in all different settings, so the senior from Foxboro, Massachusetts felt at home.

"I've always been one to make relationships with people and I like talking to people," he said. "I was only with JJ for a year, but we developed a long-lasting relationship where I still talk to him on a daily basis. Things like that made me realize sales and being customer-facing might be something I want to get into."

In his time on the Lehigh men's lacrosse team, Lynch has experienced the value of his voice.

"As a senior, I'd like to think underclassmen look up to me," he said. "I've had underclassmen come up to me and say it was great that I reached out to them their first couple months here. It made them feel comfortable.

"That stuck with me; I knew I'd like to have an impact on people and gain these relationships," Lynch continued. "Translating that to the workforce, for me it feels more natural to have conversations than sitting behind a computer all day cranking out numbers."

A finance major, Lynch learned and grew this summer in a number of tangible and intangible areas.

"It's hard to just wake up, roll over and sit at a desk and work all day," he said. "The commute to work is what can trigger your brain into thinking okay, now I'm in work mode.

"I worked out in the morning before starting my day," Lynch continued. "I had to grow as a person and be mature about getting my work done, even though I was in my house. There are a lot of distractions that can happen."

Distractions can happen in any walk of life, so Lynch is better off now for having been forced to fight through distractions.

Lynch also has another way of looking at the abnormal work environment.

"It was a great opportunity to figure out how I can contact and connect with people in this new world of being online and doing things through Zoom," he said.

As someone who's so focused on relationships, Lynch couldn't be more appreciative of the Lehigh Lacrosse network. It's a network that helped lead to his summer internship, and there's no doubt Lynch will look out for the Lehigh Lacrosse family once he enters the workforce.

"The Lehigh Lacrosse family is something special for sure," he said. "It doesn't matter if you're a high-minute guy or low-minute guy, every person on the team is valued. The relationships that are made honestly last a lifetime.

"JJ didn't have to call me, but our alums want to help us out and they want us to grow as people."

Grow is exactly what Lynch did.

"Getting to know people on a personal level, then selling the product to them, is a lot of fun," he said.

"When you make a sale and get that payoff, it's a great feeling."
