BETHLEHEM, Pa. — The Lehigh baseball team has a new member of the coaching staff, announced Wednesday by head coach Sean Leary. Sean Buchanan returns to the Lehigh Valley as the program's pitching coach for the 2021 season.

Due to the university's hiring freeze, Buchanan will begin this fall in a volunteer capacity.

He will join a coaching staff led by Leary that includes A.J. Miller, John Bisco and Mike Garzillo.

"I am still struggling to find words to describe how grateful and how excited I am for the opportunity to serve this baseball program and this university," said Buchanan. "I can't even begin to thank Coach Leary, Coach Miller, and Dean Joe Sterrett enough for entrusting me to help develop our student athletes.

"Lehigh University is a special place with a reputation of excellence. It is my intention to help uphold the standards set by Coach Leary and the university as we continue to build towards a bright future for our guys both as players and as people."

A native of New York, Buchanan spent this past spring at Albright College in Reading, Pa. in a similar role, following a stint at DeSales in 2019.

Prior to his career at DeSales in nearby Center Valley, Buchanan spent three season as the hitting coach and recruiting coordinator at Ave Maria in Naples, Fla. While at AMU, he helped lead the team to several offensive milestones including the program's home run record in 2015 and again in 2017. In 2015 and 2016, Buchanan helped assemble multiple recruiting classes that were ranked in the top five nationally by Perfect Game.

In his summers, Buchanan spent five seasons as a coach in the Perfect Game Collegiate League, working with players from some of the nation's top college programs including 14 eventual Major League Baseball draft picks.

In addition to his roles at Albright, DeSales and Ave Maria, Buchanan also had coaching stops at Bard College, Dutchess Community College and SUNY New Paltz.

Buchanan received his bachelor's degree in history from SUNY New Paltz in 2013.

"I'm really excited to have Coach Buchanan joining our Mountain Hawk staff," said Leary. "His reputation as a strong communicator and relationship builder will certainly accelerate his transition into our program.

"Coach Buc has also carved a niche as a tireless recruiter. Identifying and securing frontline talent is paramount to our program's upward trajectory and so we are psyched to get him rolling in this area. Our pitchers are anxious to begin working with him this fall!"
