SANFORD, Fla. — All-in-all, it was a successful weekend for the Lehigh baseball team, as the Mountain Hawks ended the road-trip to Florida with a 3-2 victory over Central Connecticut State Sunday morning at Sanford Memorial Stadium.
It was the second straight game against CCSU where a Lehigh pitcher struck out nine batters, as sophomore left-hander Luke Rettig threw seven strong innings with nine strikeouts, allowing just one earned run while scattering seven hits. Junior Sam Wurth threw two innings of shutout ball with four strikeouts to earn the victory.
The Blue Devils struck first in the top of the fifth inning on a fielding error by Matt Hand, causing a run to come in to score, giving CCSU a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the inning, junior Tyler Schreiner homered to tie the game up at 1. Another Lehigh error caused another run to score in the top of the seventh inning, giving CCSU a 2-1 advantage.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Tony Gallo singled in Zack Miles to tie the game up at 2-2 before Casey Rother delivered a two-out single to score Gallo, which proved to be the winning run, as Lehigh took a 3-2 lead.
Wurth shut the door once again in two strong innings of work, concluding with his first win of the season.
Three Mountain Hawks had multi-hit performances, as Tony Gallo, Adam Retzbach and Tyler Schreiner each went 2-for-4. Gerard Sweeney and Casey Rother each added a hit, totaling eight for Lehigh on the day.
The win is Lehigh's third of the 2020 campaign so far this season, sweeping the weekend against CCSU, the defending NEC Champions.
The Mountain Hawks return home on Wednesday afternoon to host Coppin State in the first home game of the season, with first pitch set for 3 p.m. from J. David Walker Field at Legacy Park.
