BETHLEHEM, Pa. – A pair of decorated Lehigh men's lacrosse players added another honor to their resume on Thursday as fifth-year senior attackman Andrew Pettit and senior faceoff specialist Conor Gaffney were named to the Tewaaraton Award Watch List. Two of just 50 watch list honorees in the nation, this marks the third straight year Lehigh has had an honoree, and first time with multiple players named to the watch list since 2015. The Tewaaraton Award annually honors the top player in college lacrosse.
Â
Lehigh features two of the five Patriot League student-athletes named to the Tewaaraton Award Watch List, along with Kevin Lindley and Ryan McNulty of Loyola and Brendan Nichtern of Army West Point.
Â
Last season, Craig Chick was named to the watch list while Pettit was added to the watch list mid-season in 2018. At the time, Pettit was the first Mountain Hawk named to the Tewaaraton Award Watch List since 2015, when Lehigh had two for a fourth straight season (Dante Fantoni and Ryan Snyder in 2012, David DiMaria, Fantoni and Matt Poillon in 2013, Poillon and Ty Souders in 2014 and Poillon and Dan Taylor in 2015). DiMaria in 2013 and Taylor in 2015 went on to make the next cut as one of 25 nominees.
Â
Pettit returned to the field in Saturday's season opener and immediately scored just 1:05 into the contest. He finished with two goals and two assists. It marked Pettit's first action since 2018, when he was one of the league's, and nation's, most prolific scorers, leading the Mountain Hawks in both goals (46) and points (66), including 10 man-up goals (good for third in the nation). Pettit was named first team All-Patriot League after the season. Pettit is a two-time All-Patriot League honoree, garnering second team as a sophomore and first team as a junior. After his four-point opener vs. Utah, Pettit now owns 90 career goals and 34 assists for 124 points.
Â
Gaffney is one of just faceoff specialists on the list, along with 2019 Tewaaraton finalist TD Ierlan. A 2019 honorable mention All-American, Gaffney was named a Patriot League Faceoff Specialist of the Year, setting league and program records for faceoff wins (249) and groundballs (152) in a season. He finished fourth nationally in faceoff percentage, winning 69.7 percent, including 60 percent or better in 15-of-17 games. He was one of just two Patriot League student-athletes (any position) named an Inside Lacrosse preseason All-America. Following a 17-of-26, 11-groundball effort in the season opener against Utah, Gaffney has now won 63.7 percent of his career faceoffs (619-of-971) with 360 groundballs. Also sensational in the classroom, Gaffney is a two-time Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Academic All-American.
Â
Pettit, Gaffney and the Mountain Hawks are set to travel to UVA for a second straight season to face the No. 1/2 and defending national champion Cavaliers. Gametime is set for 1 p.m. on ACC Network Extra (WatchESPN).
