BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh women's lacrosse freshman Gabby Schneider was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week on Monday following an impressive five-point collegiate debut in Friday's season opening win over Iona. Schneider's five points were a game high, tallying two goals and three assists.

All five of Schneider's points came in the game's first 31:52 to help the Mountain Hawks take a 11-3 lead, on the way to a dominant 16-5 season-opening win. Schneider also added a groundball and two caused turnovers.
Senior Sondra Dickey was also recognized on Monday, garnering honorable mention on the league's weekly honor roll. Dickey filled up the stat sheet, posting game highs in goals (4), draw controls (4), caused turnovers (4) and groundballs (3). Entering the season tied with Kayleen Kelly for the school record in career draw controls, Dickey passed Kelly with her four draws on Saturday (currently owning 173).

Schneider, Dickey and the Mountain Hawks will return to action on Tuesday when they travel to UMBC to face the Retrievers. Gametime is set for 5 p.m. Tuesday marks the season opener for UMBC.

Lehigh will look to build off the dominant Iona victory. Midway through the first half, the Gaels scored two straight goals to pull within 5-3, but the Mountain Hawks responded with eight straight goals, while shutting the Iona for 27:06, to cruise to victory. Lehigh started an all freshmen attack unit, with Schneider, Emma Eberhardt (two goals, one assist) and Katia Carnevale (three goals, one assist) combining for seven goals and five assists. Junior Hannah Cermack (two goals, one assist) and sophomore Maggie Kelly (two goals) also scored multiple goals.

Defensively, the Mountain Hawks caused 21 of Iona's 27 turnovers and held a 26-18 edge in groundballs. Junior goalkeeper Samantha Sagi finished with eight saves, including three in the span of 18 seconds in the second half. Lehigh improved to 4-0 all-time vs. Iona.

Tuesday marks UMBC's first game of 2020 after being picked fourth in the America East preseason poll. The Retrievers garnered 28 points and only trailed Stony Brook, Albany and New Hampshire. UMBC returns 10 letterwiners from last season after going 6-12 (4-3 in the America East). The Retrievers lost their top two scorers, but return senior Zoe Pekins (23g, 4a), and juniors Lily Kennedy (11g, 15a) and Olivia Docal (18g, 6a). UMBC also graduated its starting goalkeeper from a season ago.

Lehigh is 3-0 all-time vs. UMBC. Last season, the Mountain Hawks beat the Retrievers at home, 15-7, which marked the first meeting between the teams since 1988. Last season, Dickey scored six goals to pace the offense.

Following Tuesday's game, the Mountain Hawks will hit the road for Penn State, facing the Nittany Lions on Saturday at 3 p.m.
