BETHLEHEM, Pa. – For the first time in over a month, the Lehigh women's swimming and diving team is back in action again. This time, the Mountain Hawks will welcome in the Bucknell Bison for a mid-day showdown on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. inside Jacobs Pool. With a win, the Mountain Hawks will finish their regular season with a perfect record, while also obtaining their 10th win all-time over the Bison
In the first week of December, the Brown and White swam in the Rutgers Invitational, continuing their impressive season. "Our women fought hard here in Piscataway," head coach Rob Herb said at the conclusion of the three-day meet. "Each and every one of them is determined to be the best, and that's what excites me the most."
Two weeks ago, Lehigh was scheduled to compete against Army West Point, however due to a maintenance issue, the highly anticipated showdown against the Black Knights was cancelled.
Entering this weekend, Lehigh still sits with a 6-0 mark, its best start of the season since the 1998-99 year.
"To be honest, all season long the women have busted their tails and have worked extremely hard. We're still going! We're not done yet! There is still so much more that needs to be accomplished," expressed Herb. "Over the last couple of weeks, we've been simulating a lot of races. Despite the long layoff, we've still been training and working hard, just internally. Our bodies are conditioned to race, we're ready to go.
Early on in the season, Lehigh managed to escape past Boston University and West Chester, but the Mountain Hawks have turned a page since then, easily defeating their next four opponents and competing well down in Rutgers.
"From the start of the season to now, I think the biggest difference I've seen has been their readiness," Herb said. "They now know what to expect, they're extremely smart, well-rounded student-athletes, their stronger and just flat out better. Their attention to detail has been perfect."
Saturday's matchup with Bucknell will be the toughest test for Lehigh this season. The Bison come into Jacobs Pool with a 9-1 record. Bucknell has beaten Boston College, Army West Point, Binghamton and Holy Cross. Their lone hiccup was a defeat to the hands of the Navy Midshipmen back in November.
"Our women have their heads in the right spot," stated Herb. "No matter what happens, the goal all season long has been to prepare them for the Patriot League Championships. Last year, we put too much focus into the dual meets and didn't focus as much in February at Patriots. This year has been the exact opposite."
In Lewisburg last year, the women suffered a tough defeat to Bucknell, 161-137. The Mountain Hawks are 9-31 all-time against the Bison.
With the completion of Saturday's dual meet against Bucknell, the Mountain Hawks will have roughly a month to rest and prepare for the Patriot League Championships.
