BETHLEHEM, Pa. – For the first time since early December, the Lehigh men's swimming and diving team will finally be able to compete against someone who isn't wearing the Brown and White. On Saturday, the Bucknell Bison will travel from Lewisburg to Bethlehem for a matinee showdown inside Jacobs Pool at 1:00 p.m.
Last time out, Lehigh was supposed to battle the Army West Point Black Knights, however due to a maintenance issue, the scheduled contest was called off and both teams couldn't come to an agreement on another date, thus cancelling the scheduled dual meet.
The last time the Mountain Hawks swam competitively against an opponent came on the first week of December, where the Brown and White competed in the Rutgers Invitational. Lehigh managed to end the day on a high note, winning four of the final six races. After the completion of the event, head coach Rob Herb praised the performance from his guys. ""I'll tell you what, these men are determined and are on a mission," stated Herb. "They work extremely hard and are constantly improving."
Fast forward to present time and Lehigh has still managed to compete at a high level in practice. Despite not racing in a while, the Mountain Hawks ramped up practices, simulating an actual meet to help his team train.
"We want our guys racing at their top level," expressed Herb. "Mentally, this might be the strongest group. These guys are hungry competitors and have managed to fight through tough practices."
Coming into the season, Herb and his coaches mentioned how they needed to prepare and focus on the Patriot League Championships. So far, he's been successful. Lehigh has managed to burst out in a big way, starting the season 1-5. His reason? "We train for February; we made our schedule thinking about February. Everything we've done as team was made to prepare ourselves." added Herb.
Despite the focus all year being on the Patriot League Championships, Herb stated his team still wants to come out and beat Bucknell.
"The Bison have become one of our main rivals. They are a good program, and we've had some back-and-forth battles in the past. I expect this meet to come down to the last few events. I'm excited to swim here at Jacobs Pool. We swim well here, while being supported by the best parents, students, supporters and alumni."
The Blue and Orange will come into Bethlehem on Saturday riding a 5-5 record. Back in November, the Bison lost to Loyola (Md.) 187-108. The Mountain Hawks narrowly defeated the Greyhounds in October. Both teams also have wins over Boston University and Lafayette.
Last year in Lewisburg, the Mountain Hawks snuck past Bucknell for the win, 149-145. In the all-time series, Lehigh is 18-38.
With the completion of Saturday's dual meet against Bucknell, the Mountain Hawks will have roughly a month to rest and prepare for the Patriot League Championships.
