Lehigh looks for sixth straight win in rematch at Navy
1/14/2020 3:28:00 PM | Women's Basketball
BETHLEHEM, Pa. — The Lehigh women's basketball team is off to its best start since the 2009-10 season, when the Mountain Hawks started the year 13-2 in the first 15 games. This time around, Lehigh is 12-3 overall with an unblemished 4-0 record in the Patriot League. On Wednesday, Lehigh will face off with Navy at Alumni Hall in Annapolis, the second meeting between the two foes this season. The Mountain Hawks were victorious over the Mids at Stabler Arena on Jan. 2, by a score of 70-40. Tip-off for Wednesday's matchup is set for 7 p.m.
For the third time this season, a Lehigh victory came down to under five seconds to go, after Camryn Buhr hit a game-winning shot with 2.7 seconds left to conquer American on the road Saturday afternoon. The Mountain Hawks used key possessions in the final 38 seconds, led by seniors Cameryn Benz and Buhr to upend the Eagles and stay unbeaten atop the Patriot League standings.
Sophomore forward Emma Grothaus scored 14 points and added 10 rebounds, good enough for her first double-double of the 2019-20 season so far, while Benz had 13 points and Buhr and sophomore guard Megan Walker each recorded outings of 10 points. Walker had two 3-pointers in the win over AU, finishing with a total of seven for the week after a 5 3-pointer performance against Boston U. at Stabler Arena last week. She was named a Patriot League Honorable Mention for her week.
The victory for Lehigh also marked the first time since the 2004-05 season the team started with a 4-0 record in the Patriot League.
The Mountain Hawks lack individual players among stat leaders in the Patriot League, but for the team, Lehigh has the second-best scoring defense in the league at 55.8 points per game, ranked just below Bucknell at 54.9. Lehigh is ranked third in scoring offense at 65.3 points per game, but has the top-ranked scoring margin at plus-9.5.
Against Navy, Lehigh will look to start the season with a 5-0 Patriot League record for the first time since that 2004-05 campaign, where the Mountain Hawks started 6-0.
It hasn't been the best of starts to the Patriot League slate for Navy, who started the campaign 0-4 after dropping the final three games of non-league play, as the Mids are currently on a seven-game losing streak.
Since the Midshipmen fell to Lehigh, 70-40, to open the league portion of the schedule at the beginning of the month, the team has fallen to Colgate, Bucknell and Holy Cross, all by an average margin of defeat of 20.3 points per game.
Its last time out, Navy fell to Colgate on Saturday, 80-55. The team was led by freshman Mimi Schrader, who poured in a career-high 11 points, while Jasmine Bishop added nine and Lindsay Llewellyn and Mary Kate Ulasewicz each finished with seven points. Sophie Gatzounas scored six points with three steals on the defensive end.
Through 15 games so far this season, Navy has the lowest-ranked scoring offense in the Patriot League at 54 points per game, while ranked eighth in scoring margin at minus-5.7, after allowing just 59.7 points per game to opponents, which ranks fourth.
The Midshipmen also have the worst free throw percentage (58.2), field goal percentage (36.0) and field goal percentage defense (44.2) in the Patriot League.
A matchup that dates all the way back to the 1981 season and a Patriot League matchup since the very beginning, Wednesday evening will mark the 65th meeting all-time between Lehigh and Navy.
While the Midshipmen lead the all-time series, 33-31, the Mountain Hawks have taken the last four of five from Navy including both meetings during the 2018-19 season and the first of this year.
The last Lehigh defeat to Navy came on the road at Alumni Hall back on Jan. 27, 2018, a 53-50 victory for the Midshipmen.
Wednesday's game will be live streamed on the Patriot League Network and an internet audio stream is available as always on Lehighsports.com with Matt Markus on the play-by-play call. The pre-game show will begin at 6:50 p.m.
