HAMILTON, N.Y. – At Colgate, racing a 4.8K, the Lehigh women's cross country team previewed the Patriot League Championship course on Saturday. The Mountain Hawks finished fifth at the Harry Lang Invitational.
For the second straight week, the Mountain Hawks raced only a partial squad. Despite racing only a quarter of the team, this race was important for Lehigh as they took this as an opportunity to preview the Patriot League Championship course.
"It was critical for our team to see this course, and either workout or race on it," said head coach Debbie Utesch. "They now will be able to make adjustments when they're back here for the Patriot League Championship."
With a slight drizzle throughout the race, senior Ashleigh Crawford raced out and ran with the front group, while Jade Sessions, Elyse Barkstrom and Madison Zaun raced fairly under control.
"Ashleigh learned what she needs to change and how to run the hills. The next time she runs this course it'll be an improvement," said Utesch. "Jade, Elyse and Madison did a nice job of moving up in the second half of the race."
Crawford was the first Lehigh finisher to cross the line with a time of 18:06.90, finishing in 15th place. Sessions, a sophomore, finished 19th with a time of 18:16.90. Barkstrom was the third Mountain Hawk to cross the line with a time of 18:22.10, registering a 26th place finish, while the freshman Zaun ended 32nd with a time of 18:32.20.
Rounding out the scoring for Lehigh, Annalise Davis was the fifth Lehigh finisher and tallied a 40th place finish with a time of 18:44.90. Maura Henderson ended Saturday with a time of 18:51.90, while Natalie Condon had a time of 20:37.80
Boston University raced a full squad and won the Harry Lang Invitational with a score of 26, followed by Syracuse who finished second with a score of 53.
"We got a great look at the strength of Boston and can now start putting together some strategies for when we race them later on." added Utesch.
Up next, Lehigh will return to its home course and host the Lafayette next Saturday with the start of the race beginning at 10:00 a.m.
"We're really looking forward to putting a full squad on the starting line next weekend. I'm happy with the way we looked racing partial squads while we're in a heavy training cycle."
