Women's Cross Country Heads To Colgate To Preview Patriot League Championship Course On Saturday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Days after notching a complete team win, the Lehigh women's cross country team will again be in action on Saturday competing in the Harry Lang Invitational. The women's race will begin at 11:30 a.m.

With only a partial squad last Friday, the Mountain Hawks used pack running to win the Lehigh Invitational. Lehigh just barely edged La Salle for the win as the Mountain Hawks tallied 57, while the Explorers totaled 58.

Despite not having a runner in the top-7, the swarm of Lehigh runners came swarming in right after. Lehigh had six of the next 13 runners cross the finish line to help push the Brown and White to victory.

Susie Poore was the first Lehigh finisher; the junior tallied an eighth-place finish with a time of 22:38.12. The Mountain Hawks also got a big performance from freshman Andrea Miller. The newcomer was the second Lehigh finisher and finished ninth with a time of 22:46.34. Nicole Abbondandelo, Hannah Bonaguidi and Martina Sell finished 14th, 15th and 16th respectively.

"It was good to see our squad moving forward towards the end of the race and finish strong," said head coach Debbie Utesch. "The thing that we want to do a as a whole team is to take that pack and move it up. We want to cut down the differential between the actual winner and our first runner."

Lehigh will have its chance to do that on Saturday as they travel to Colgate for the Harry Lang Invitational. This is an important race for Lehigh as they will get a chance to study and prepare the same course that the Patriot League Championship will be held on.

The Goodman Campus Cross Country Course is a total opposite of the course that Harry Lang Invitational will be on. Lehigh's course is steadily flat, while Colgate's course consists of constant hills.

"I told our team that it's a course that you really can't get into a rhythm on any part of it," stated Utesch. "It's a very choppy feeling when you're racing it. They're going to have to get really comfortable with racing in a choppy progression.

After coming away with a great performance on Friday, the Mountain Hawks knew they had to prepare the right way for this weekend. "We have done some hill workouts to prepare more for it," Utesch added. "Our primary objective with the trip to Colgate this weekend is to get the team on the course so they can get a feel of the course and the terrain. We'll also get to see some other Patriot League opponents."

Saturday's race will consist of six teams. Boston University, Bucknell, Colgate, Navy and Syracuse will join Lehigh on the starting line.

For the second straight week, Lehigh will race only a partial squad. Senior Ashley Crawford, junior Elyse Barkstrom and sophomore Martina Sell will lead the way.
