Mountain Hawks Take Fifth Place At ECAC Championships

NEW YORK – After a strong showing at the Paul Short Run earlier this month, Lehigh women's cross country ran at the ECAC Championships at Van Cortlandt Park in New York City on Friday morning. The Mountain Hawks put forth a strong showing, taking fifth place out of 21 competing schools.

"The women had a solid race today in the Bronx," said head coach Debbie Utesch. "We had a few women with off races as they are battling through illness, but I was proud of the way they continued to fight through the 6000 meter to the finish for the sake of the team effort."

Senior Maddison Hayes led the way for the Mountain Hawks, placing 16th out of 251 runners to finish the 6K in 21:29.9. Rounding out the top five for Lehigh was first-year Kaitlyn Highduch (27th, 21:46.2), junior Lucy Afanasewicz (37th, 21:56.4), sophomore Grace Hughes (43rd, 22:06.5) and senior Savanah Beavers (45th, 22:09.4).

"Grace Hughes continues to be a tough, consistent competitor for us in what has been a breakthrough sophomore campaign and Kaitlyn Highduch has also displayed some good racing maturity for a first-year," said Utesch. "The race of the day definitely goes to Maddie Hayes with her All-East performance. She was poised and confident and her race today reflected the efforts I have seen in her recent workouts."

Other finishers for the Mountain Hawks included sophomore Hope Trimmer (62nd, 22:29.6), first-year Chloe Browne (85th, 22:56.7), first-year Sadie Millett (90th, 23:00.6), first-year Kaya Meler (121st, 23:28.0), first-year Brenna Dahlgren (128th, 23:34.0), sophomore Elizabeth Jenulis (145th, 23:50.2), sophomore Aurora Wilson (164th, 24:05.0), first-year Elizabeth Ehrhardt (193rd, 24:40.7) and sophomore Siri Hellenbrand (225th, 25:44.8).

Next up for the Mountain Hawks will be the Patriot League Championships at Lafayette College on Saturday, November 2.

"We will continue to scrap for every point as we approach the Patriot League Championships in two weeks," said Utesch.
