NEW BRITAIN, Ct. – The Lehigh women's cross country accomplished what they set out to do on Saturday. The Mountain Hawks won the CCSU Ted Own Invitational today in thanks to a complete team effort. In the 5K race, Lehigh had a low score of 28, while CCSU finished second with 70.
Going into the day, Lehigh set its goal to run up front and to win the race. Competing against 18 other teams, the Mountain Hawks met their goal in dominating fashion. Lehigh placed six runners inside the top-10.
"Today was a tremendous effort from our ladies," claimed head coach Debbie Utesch. "We have a heavy week of training with people battling illnesses, but we still went out and put together a great effort.
Susie Poore led the Brown and White today. The junior finished third overall with a time of 18:18.10. This was the second time that Poore paced the Mountain Hawks, the first was leading her team in the Lehigh Invitational.
A huge bright spot on the day was freshman Madison Zaun. The first-year runner had her best collegiate race of the season with a fourth-place finish. "Madison had great poise for a freshman," said Utesch. "She had a tremendous race, but starting strong and finishing strong is what I'm impressed with."
After Poore and Zaun, Hannah Bonaguidi and Jade Sessions followed along as they finished fifth and seventh respectively. Martina Sell finished the day with a ninth place finish at 18:39.90. Senior Diana Hammerstone finished 10th overall, while Nicole Abbondandelo was the 7th Lehigh runner to cross the line. The sophomore finished the race in 11th.
At the start of the race, Lehigh jetted out of the box and immediately took the front. Halfway through the race, Bonaguidi, Poore and Sell were right with CCSU's Angelia Rafter, the winner of the race. Zaun's strong finish in the final mile propelled her into the top-5 to help seal the victory.
"We came in confident today and ran aggressive," added Utesch. "We started out in front from the get-go. Coming into the race, we wanted to be in the front and to see what's it like running out with a lead."
Up next, the red-hot Mountain Hawks will soar into the Paul Short Run on Oct. 5.
