BETHLEHEM, Pa. – In the 46th edition of the Paul Short Run, the Lehigh women's cross country team finished 23rd among the 41-team field with a score of 694 points.
Coming into this race with tons of momentum, the Mountain Hawks suffered a bit of a setback as they had battled their way through the field on Saturday. When the gun sounded, the masses of runners jolted ahead of the Brown and White, immediately putting pressure on Lehigh out of the gate. As the race progressed, Lehigh fought and clawed its way back into the race, but ultimately finished 23rd.
The first Lehigh finisher to cross the line in the 6K Gold race was Hannah Bonaguidi. The senior finished 112th with a time of 21:21.70. The second Brown and White finisher on the day was Susie Poore. The junior registered a time of 21:28.40, good for 128th.
"When you have your first runner finish outside of the top-100 in a race of this volume it's really going to hurt your team going forward." claimed head coach Debbie Utesch.
Senior Diana Hammerstone was the third Lehigh finisher (135th) at 21:31.30, while Jade Sessions followed in fourth (169th) at 21:47.10. Rounding out the scorecard for the Mountain Hawks, senior Ashleigh Crawford was the fifth Lehigh finisher at 191st (21:55.90).
"I saw a lot of individual PRs on the Lehigh course, but unfortunately I think our team got lost in the numbers. We didn't do a good job of connecting with each other in the middle of the race." added Utesch.
Queen's University took home the title with a score of 128 points. Adams State finished second at 176 points, while the University of Penn finished third with 177 points.
"We'll take a look where we are tomorrow when we meet. We did have 10 really tough days of training and back-to-back practices. We were probably one of the only teams that raced back-to-back weeks coming into here." said Utesch.
In the 6K Open race, Kara Bonner was the first Lehigh finisher at 52nd (22:32.10), while senior Maura Henderson finished 87th with a time of 23:05.30.
Up next, Lehigh will compete in the Penn State National Open on Oct. 18.
"I love this team," stated Utesch. "I'm confident we'll respond and be ready for Patriot League's."
