Richmond fourth-quarter surge helps Spiders down Mountain Hawks, 4-2

9/13/2019 10:28:00 PM | Field Hockey

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh field hockey team outplayed perennial Atlantic 10 contender Richmond for the first half and held a 2-1 lead deep into the third quarter, but the Spiders responded with three goals in the game's final 19:50 to down the Mountain Hawks, 4-2 on Friday. Junior Anna Lehman scored just 2:30 into the contest, and Lehigh later retook a lead just before halftime, but Richmond came back to hand the Mountain Hawks their first loss of the season.

"We had a great first three quarters. We were strong and executed our game plan really well," said Lehigh head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer. "We failed to adjust in some areas when they started to adjust to our game plan, and that hurt us. We did a really nice job implementing some things we worked on for the attack line, in terms of moving the ball up the field the way we wanted to and getting really good shooting opportunities. For the first three quarter, our shots were even against them, which was great. I attribute that to the work our forwards and midfield put in this week to make that happen."

Lehman opened the scoring before the game was three minutes old. Off Lehigh's first penalty corner of the game, junior Lenke Havas put the ball towards cage, a Richmond defender got a piece, but Lehman was there by the goal line to put home her second goal of the season.

Richmond evened the score in the final minute of the first quarter, as a direct shot off a corner from Amanda DaSilva went off a Lehigh defender's stick and beat freshman goalkeeper Maddie Kahn high.

The score remained 1-1 until the 27th minute. Consecutive Lehigh shots were saved, from sophomore Olivia Perrone and junior Drew Pecora, but a penalty stroke was called and Havas converted for her first goal of the season to give the Mountain Hawks a 2-1 lead. Lehigh held a 12-6 edge in shots heading into halftime.

The Mountain Hawks began the third quarter with three of the first five shots, extending their advantage to 15-8. However, from there, Richmond ended the game with the final 15 shots of the contest. One of those went in at the 40:10 mark, against coming off a penalty corner, to knot the score at two.

In the fourth, Richmond caught Lehigh twice on the fast break, both scored by Elise Zwicklbauer and assisted by Lindsey Frank. In both instances, Zwicklbauer was sprung in all alone on Kahn, scoring at the 54:36 mark to take a 3-2 lead and at 56:21 for the 4-2 advantage, which proved to be the final.

"What we didn't do well in the last quarter, which unfortunately cost us the game, is we allowed a lot of corners defensively," said Dallmeyer. "We did not defend them the way we needed to, and then the transition game really killed us. They did a nice job of moving the ball quickly and catching us off guard. We knew that was going to happen and we didn't make the adjustments we needed to in order to stop them."

Final shots were 23-15 in favor of Richmond while the Spiders held an 11-3 edge in penalty corners. Kahn continued her strong play, making nine saves and a number of other key plays that don't make the stat sheet.

"Conflicted feelings honestly because we did play a really great game," said Dallmeyer. "There were a couple details that ended up costing us the game, however. To be able to compete at this level, put up some good stats against a good team like this and be able to score goals isn't something we've consistently been able to do in the past. Now that we are in a position to be able to compete with these teams, I'm disappointed that mentally we had some lapses, which didn't allow us to pull out the win."

The Mountain Hawks remain home on Sunday when they host Georgetown at 12 p.m. on the Patriot League Network.
