BETHLEHEM, Pa. — The Lehigh women's basketball team is eager to embark on a brand new season in 2019-20 after achieving the program's best record since the 2010-11 campaign. This season marks the 25th season of Sue Troyan as head coach and features two non-league home opponents from the Atlantic 10 and Big East conferences, the annual Education Day, a trip out of the country for Thanksgiving weekend and a trip home for six Mountain Hawks to Minnesota during the holidays. All of which will set up yet another exciting Patriot League schedule.
Lehigh kicks off the new season with a date at Delaware State on Nov. 6 for the third matchup all-time. The Mountain Hawks then travel to newly-minted Division I Merrimack on Nov. 9 for the first time.
The home opener for Lehigh is on Wednesday, Nov. 13 against George Washington at Stabler Arena and then is followed by the annual Education Day game on Monday, Nov. 18 at 11 a.m. against Central Connecticut State.
"Our Education Day game is one of our team favorites because they get to play in front of a packed house at Stabler Arena as one of our highest attended home games on our schedule," said Troyan. "The crowd is always excited about the opportunity to be there and brings a ton of excitement and energy to the game. Most importantly, the game is our way of giving back to our local community and providing an opportunity to many kids on the south side who may otherwise not have the opportunity to attend a game at Lehigh."
The Mountain Hawks then stay home for one more matchup before Thanksgiving as they host Seton Hall of the Big East on Friday, Nov. 22 at 6 p.m.
One of the most exciting weekends on the schedule has the Mountain Hawks flying to Nassau, Bahamas for the first annual Bahamas Hoopfest Classic, taking on Ball State on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28 and then Saturday, Nov. 30 against Fordham. This will be the first time in program history Lehigh will travel outside of the United States to compete.
"We're very appreciative of the opportunity to play in Bahamas Hoopfest Classic over Thanksgiving and for some of our players, this will be their first time traveling and playing outside of the country," Troyan said. "The tournament will provide our team the opportunity to test themselves against some strong programs from both the Atlantic 10 and Mid-America Conferences preparing us well for the rigors of our conference schedule.
"Although deeply saddened by the devastation to their country, we also look forward to providing support to their local community during this trip."
Lehigh then returns home to face Bloomsburg at Stabler Arena on Tuesday, Dec. 3 at 6 p.m. On Sunday, Dec. 8, the Mountain Hawks will travel to Emmitsburg, Md. to face Mount St. Mary's for the 11th time in the program's histories.
For the second time in the last three seasons, Lehigh will take on Big Ten foe Minnesota on Saturday, Dec. 21, the unofficial homecoming for six players, senior Hannah Hedstrom, junior Mariah Sexe, sophomores Megan Walker and Emma Grothaus and freshmen Frannie Hottinger and Anna Harvey.
"With six rostered athletes hailing from the Minneapolis and surrounding areas, we are thrilled to be heading back to Minnesota for this matchup," said Troyan. "We are looking at this game as a home game of sorts, as we expect to have a large contingent of Lehigh fans in the stands to support our program and players. We've developed some very strong recruiting ties in Minnesota, attracting high level student-athletes to our program who are seeking the balance of education, competitive basketball and family in their Lehigh experience. We're excited to showcase them in front of their hometowns."
The final non-league contest of the season comes as Lehigh takes on Saint Peter's in Jersey City, N.J. on Sunday Dec. 29. This will be the seventh time the Mountain Hawks have met with the Peacocks and the first time since 2015.
Lehigh opens Patriot League play on Thursday Jan. 2 against Navy at Stabler Arena, then travel to Loyola on Jan. 5 and then host Boston U. on Jan. 8. The Mountain Hawks travel for back-to-back contests at American on Jan. 11 and then Navy on Jan. 15 before returning back home to face defending Patriot League champion Bucknell on Jan. 18 and Holy Cross on Jan. 22.
The Rivalry continues for Lehigh and Lafayette on Jan. 25 at the Kirby Sports Center for the 96th meeting all-time between the two teams. The Mountain Hawks have taken the last eight contests dating back to Jan. 27, 2016.
Lehigh hosts American on Jan. 29 and then visits Army West Point on Feb. 1. Lehigh hosts Lafayette on Jan. 25 at Stabler Arena for the 97th meeting between the two teams. Lehigh then visits Worcester, Mass. to face Holy Cross on Wednesday Feb. 12 before hosting Army and Colgate for back-to-back contests on Feb. 15 and 19.
Three of the final four games of the regular season are on the road for the Mountain Hawks with a trip to Bucknell on Saturday, Feb. 22 and then a trip to Boston U. on Wednesday Feb. 26. Lehigh hosts Loyola for the final regular season matchup at Stabler Arena on Mar. 2 before facing Colgate in Hamilton, N.Y. for the regular season finale on Wednesday Mar. 4.
"The Patriot League will be as competitive as ever, as each year the league seems to grow in strength. This year will be no different," said Troyan. "We feel that we have put together a challenging non-conference schedule that will prepare our team well for the rigors of the Patriot League season."
The Patriot League Tournament is set to begin with the first round on Mar. 7, followed by the Quarterfinal round on Mar. 9. The Patriot League semifinals will be Mar. 12 with the Championship game set for Sunday, Mar. 15 broadcast live on CBS Sports Network.
All Patriot League home games are scheduled to be on Service Electric 2 Sports and all non-league home games are expected to be streamed on the Patriot League Network.
