LEXINGTON, Va. — For the third time in four games, Lehigh baseball found themselves playing in extra innings and for the second straight game, they found themselves on the winning side. The Mountain Hawks needed only one run, a big one in the top of the 11th to take the series opener over VMI Friday night at Gray-Minor Stadium.
With the score deadlocked at 0-0 in the top of the 11th inning, senior Ryan Malloy delivered the only (and most important) run of the ball game, a solo home run to left field to give Lehigh a 1-0 lead. The homer was Malloy's fourth of the season and it added to an already impressive night, as he finished 3-for-5 with two doubles and a home run. With the three hits, he extends his on-base streak to 11 straight games and improves his batting average to .438 (21-for-48) with a slugging percentage of .875.
"Our pitching all night long gave the offense the chance to deliver a key hit and once again it was Malloy coming through in the clutch," said head coach Sean Leary. "He's been outstanding all season and today was just another example."
Malloy's late inning heroics wasn't the only reason the Mountain Hawks are enjoying Friday night's victory, as the arms on the mound Friday did most of the dirty work and made sure the Keydets only had four hits that didn't convert into runs.
Junior right-hander Levi Stoudt was on-point for his second start in a row, making easy work of VMI for the entirety of his outing. He pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing just four hits and struck out seven. Stoudt has now thrown 13 straight innings without allowing a run. Senior lefty Ethan Frohman (1-0) picked up right where Stoudt left off in the eighth inning and cruised to his first victory of the 2019 season. Frohman threw four hitless innings, allowing no runs and struck out six batters.
"Levi and Ethan were outstanding tonight," said Leary. "They were in complete control the entire game and they just continued to post zeros.
"It's very difficult to pitch in a scoreless game when there is no margin for error. But, both Levi and Ethan have such a confident and calm mound presence and they just focused on getting their job done."
Lehigh needed just the combination of Stoudt and Frohman to get through the game, as the duo combined for 11 innings on the mound, allowing no runs over four hits with 13 total strikeouts.
Aside from Malloy who had three of Lehigh's four hits on the night, junior shortstop Matt Hand went 1-for-4 and freshman third baseman Gerard Sweeney drew two walks.
With the victory, the Mountain Hawks improve to 6-7 on the young season and extend their winning streak to two straight. They will look to continue the streak on Saturday against VMI at 2 p.m. Right-hander Jason Reynolds (2-1, 5.79 ERA) is scheduled to get the start.
