Mountain Hawks drop final game of series at James Madison on Wednesday

HARRISONBURG, Va. — It just wasn't the outing they were looking for, as Lehigh Baseball fell to James Madison, 10-1 on Wednesday at Veteran's Memorial Park.
The Mountain Hawks had freshman Matt Stamford pitching in his first collegiate start, which had a rough start in the bottom of the first inning where he walked three Dukes and hit a batter with one of the walks resulting in the first run of the game.
The bottom of the third inning didn't fare well for Lehigh either, as JMU scored eight times on seven hits including three Lehigh errors. After the Dukes got out to a 6-0 lead halfway through the inning, Yash Rane came on to make his first start of the 2019 season in relief of Stamford, who finished the outing throwing just two innings, allowing seven runs, six earned on five hits with three walks and two strikeouts. JMU scored three more runs against Rane in the inning to take a 9-0 lead heading into the top of the fourth inning.
Lehigh finally cracked the run column in the top of the sixth inning when Eric Cichocki singled to center field that scored Chase Carlson, cutting the deficit to 9-1.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, with Sam Wurth pitching in relief of Rane, who went four innings, allowing just two hits, two runs, one earned and four strikeouts. Harry Brown took Wurth deep in the inning for his first home run of the 2019 campaign, and extended JMU's lead to 10-1 and that's how it ended.
The Mountain Hawks only managed five hits on the afternoon, as Cichocki had the most notable start, going 1-for-4 with the lone RBI of the ballgame. Chase Carlson scored that run, and also went 1-for-3. Casey Rother went 1-for-3, as well as Joe Gorla and Quinn McKenna finally registered his first hit of the season, going 1-for-2.
Patriot League Player of the Week Ryan Malloy was finally cooled off by the James Madison pitching, as his eight-game hitting streak was snapped. However, Malloy did draw a walk, thus extending his on-base streak to nine straight games dating back to Feb. 16 at Duke. He is still hitting .450 (18-for-40) on the season despite not registering a hit on Wednesday.
With the loss, the Mountain Hawks fall to 4-7 on the season and have lost their last three games. Lehigh will play on Thursday in an added game with the University of Lynchburg at 1 p.m. This will be the first matchup all-time between the programs.
