Both offenses lit it up, combining for 19 runs on 29 hits between the two.
Lehigh got on the board first in the top of the first inning when Tony Gallo flied out to center field, completing the sacrifice-fly, scoring Mike Maguire to give the Mountain Hawks a 1-0 lead.
Lynchburg answered back with three runs between the first and second innings, as the Hornets pulled ahead, 4-1 at the end of the second inning.
The Mountain Hawks' offense surged ahead in the third and fourth innings, thanks to a Gallo double that scored Gerard Sweeney, a Matt Hand single to score Jeff Shanfeldt and a three-run home run from Mike Maguire in the top of the fourth inning to give Lehigh a 6-4 lead. The home run for Maguire was his first of the season.
Between the fourth and seventh innings, Lynchburg scored two more times to go ahead, 7-6 in the bottom of the seventh after a two-RBI double.
The Mountain Hawks scored twice in the top of the ninth inning after Shanfeldt walked with the bases loaded, scoring Sweeney and then a fielding error that scored Malloy to give Lehigh a 8-7 lead heading into what was thought to be the final frame.
The Hornets' sac-fly in the bottom of the ninth inning forced extra innings by tying the game up at eight.
Lehigh started the 10th inning with three consecutive doubles from Jake Kochmansky, Mike Maguire and Gerard Sweeney. Maguire's double scored Kochmansky and gave the Mountain Hawks a 9-8 lead. Shanfeldt's single through the left side scored Sweeney to give Lehigh a two-run advantage. With the big inning, the lead was too much to handle, as Lehigh survived, 10-9 in 10 innings.
Sweeney led the Mountain Hawks by going 4-for-5 with a double and three runs scored. Shanfeldt went 3-for-5 with one run, two RBIs and one walk. Maguire had a 2-for-5 day with a home run, a double, two runs scored, four RBIs and a walk.
Senior Ryan Malloy went hitless for the second straight day, however, he walked in the top of the 10th inning, extending his reached-base streak to 10 straight games.
Sophomore Peter Woltersdorf (2-0) threw 3.1 innings of relief, allowing two earned runs on four hits with three strikeouts to earn his second win of the season.
The Mountain Hawks improve to 5-7 on the season and enter the weekend looking to take a three-game series with VMI in Lexington, Va. before heading to Teaneck, N.J. on Tuesday and then returning back to Bethlehem for the home opener at J. David Walker Field on Wednesday against Penn.
