BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's tennis team extended its winning streak to four straight with a 6-1 victory over the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers at the Lewis Indoor Tennis Center Sunday morning.
"Overall it was a good battle. We rallied from behind in doubles and threw the first punch in the singles in first, second and fourth singles. I'm proud of how our guys responded to the challenge and stepped up," said head coach Wouter Hendrix after the win.
After winning the No. 3 doubles with seniors Christopher Auteri and Sam Bencheghib 6-1, the Mountain Hawks had a close match at the No. 1 doubles that saw sophomore Harry Wang and sophomore Jacob Edelchik winning a contested 6-4 match.
Up 1-0 over the Mountaineers, junior Jack Martin-Dyer took a two-set victory at the No. 3 singles flight, winning 6-0, 6-4, to give the Mountain Hawks an early 2-0 advantage.
After falling in the No. 2 singles flight, Lehigh would win the next five matches, starting with freshman Gary Fishkin winning the No. 4 singles flight in three sets. After dropping the first set 6-3, Fishkin went into overdrive, winning the next two sets 6-2 and 6-0.
Looking to secure the victory, senior Bryant Born secured a three-set victory to give the Mountain Hawks a then 4-1 score. Another Mountain Hawk to fall in the first set 6-3, Born stormed back, winning 6-4 and 6-2 in the following sets to clinch Lehigh's fourth win of the season.
The final two flights saw Edelchik and freshman Andrew Nakhjavan win the No. 5 and No. 6 singles 8-2.
Lehigh continues its long stretch of home games as it welcomes the Hofstra Pride to Bethlehem on March 2 for a 10 a.m. start time.
