Stellar start, tough finish for Lehigh in 14-9 defeat at No. 4 Cornell

2/24/2019 7:12:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Lehigh men's lacrosse team jumped out to a 5-0 lead on No. 4 Cornell midway through the first quarter and held the lead for much of the contest, but the Big Red exploded for seven fourth-quarter goals to come back and beat the Mountain Hawks, 14-9 on Saturday. Lehigh had eight different goal scorers, with senior Alexander Tumminello netting two goals to lead the way. Junior Conor Gaffney won 14-of-23 faceoffs in another strong effort, while sophomore Joel Trucksess was a perfect 4-of-4. Lehigh was vying for its first top-five win since 2012.

"I was proud of the way we started the game and disappointed with the way we finished," said Lehigh head coach Kevin Cassese. "I think Cornell had a lot to do with that. They played a near flawless fourth quarter while capitalizing on every mistake we made."
Senior Eddie Bouhall helped lead the defense with a groundball and three caused turnovers, also dishing an assist. Sophomore Teddy Leggett scored a goal while recording four groundballs and three caused turnovers. Along with Tumminello, freshman Tommy Schelling added a goal and assist for a second straight game.

Tumminello and Schelling opened the scoring at 14:21 and 12:47 of the first quarter, respectively. The goals kept coming for Lehigh, with junior Ryan Klose scoring at 10:03, junior Andrew Eichelberger at 9:12 and freshman Cole Kirst at 7:50.

Cornell responded with a four-goal run, pulling within 5-4 midway through the second quarter. Junior Parker Kent ended Lehigh's 18:55 scoreless drought before Cornell pulled back within one, 6-5, in the final minute of the half.

The Mountain Hawks outscored the Big Red 3-2 in the third quarter, which began with goals from defensive midfielders Leggett and junior Erik DiGirolamo. Tumminello's rip with 42 seconds left in the quarter gave Lehigh a 9-7 lead heading to the fourth.

That's when Cornell's offense came alive, scoring four times in the first 4:32 before adding three insurance goals for the 14-9 final.

Final shots were 36-33 in favor of Lehigh while the Mountain Hawks held a 31-25 edge in groundballs. Sophomore James Spence made nine saves in goal across Cornell's Caelahn Bullen, who made 14.

Following Sunday's game, the Mountain Hawks will open Patriot League play on Saturday, Mar. 2 at No. 16/17 Colgate. Opening faceoff is set for 12 p.m.

"We will keep our heads up and continue to battle," said Cassese. "That's who we are and it's in our DNA. We enter Patriot League play now and so a new season begins. We are 0-0 starting next week."
