BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Coming off a 1-3 February which included a number of close calls, the Lehigh men's lacrosse team looks to start off Patriot League play on a high note when it travels to Colgate to face the No. 16/19 Raiders on Saturday at 12 p.m. The Mountain Hawks had a chance in all three defeats, leading Hofstra and No. 4 Cornell after three quarters and holding a halftime lead over No. 11 Virginia at the half. Lehigh will face another nationally-ranked foe on Saturday, eying to win its Patriot League opener for the ninth time in the last 10 years.
On Sunday, Lehigh jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead over the Big Red just 7:10 into the game. The goals came from five different goal-scorers; for the game, eight different Mountain Hawks scored Lehigh's nine goals. Lehigh's first and last scores of the day came from senior Alexander Tumminello, who leads the Mountain Hawks in goals (7) through four games. He is one of three players tied for first with eight points, along with classmates Mickey Fitzpatrick and Tristan Rai (each with four goals and four assists).
Two freshmen scored goals in Lehigh's initial 5-0 run - Tommy Schelling (a man-up goal) and Cole Kirst. Cornell responded with a 4-0 run, but the Mountain Hawks responded with three of the next four bridging the second and third quarters -- all from defensive midfielders (junior Parker Kent, junior Erik DiGirolamo and sophomore Teddy Leggett). Lehigh took a 9-7 lead into the fourth, but the Big Red scored seven goals on 13 fourth-quarter shots to win, 14-9.
Junior Conor Gaffney continued his strong play, winning 14-of-23 faceoffs with seven groundballs. Through four games, he stands ninth nationally in faceoff percentage (64.5, 49-of-76). Schelling had a goal and assist for a second straight game while Leggett scored his second goal of the season and added four groundballs and three caused turnovers. Senior Eddie Bouhall posted an assist, two groundballs and three caused turnovers. Lehigh was vying for its first top-five win since 2012.
The Mountain Hawks will continue to face strong opponents, with Lehigh's next two foes - Colgate and Army West Point - currently in both national top 20 polls. The Mountain Hawks' next opponent after that, Rutgers, is near the top of "others receiving votes." After Saturday's game at Colgate, Lehigh will return home for the first time in exactly one month to host the Black Knights.
Lehigh has won eight of its last nine against Colgate, most recently beating the Raiders 11-6 in last season's Patriot League Quarterfinals. The game after, the Mountain Hawks beat No. 11/13 Navy in the semifinals, marking Lehigh's last win vs. a nationally-ranked opponent. Last season, Lehigh beat three ranked opponents and will search for its first ranked victory in 2019 on Saturday.
Colgate opened its season, and the Matt Karweck era as Raiders' head coach, with a big 12-9 win at No. 10 Syracuse. Colgate has followed with a win at Binghamton and loss at No. 3 Maryland. Through three games, Nicky Petkevich leads Colgate offensively with 11 points (nine goals, two assists). Sam Cleveland owns nine (six goals, three assists) and Griffin Brown has seven (five goals, two assists). The last time the teams played at Colgate, the Mountain Hawks won 11-5 in 2017. The schools first met in 1956, a 16-0 Colgate victory. Lehigh's first win was in 1960 by an 8-6 final.
