Mountain Hawks Unable To Repel Late Push From American - Buhr Sets New Career High In Scoring
2/16/2019 4:37:00 PM | Women's Basketball
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Leading by as much as seven points in the fourth quarter, the Lehigh women's basketball team was unable to hold off the American University Eagles, falling 50-47 at Bender Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Lehigh falls to 15-9 overall and 7-6 in Patriot League play while American advances to 16-8 overall and 12-1 in league play. This is the 12th game in a row that the Eagles have won.
On the back of an 11-point third quarter, Junior Camryn Buhr set a career high in scoring, chipping in 23 points on 10-of-19 shooting. Buhr also recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 11 rebounds on the day and is the fifth time in her career she's brought in 11 rebounds. Joining Buhr in double figures in scoring was junior Gena Grundhoffer, who scored 10 points and brought in seven rebounds.
Buhr's 10-for-19 shooting performance is just the second time this season a Mountain Hawk recorded 10 or more field goals in a game, with junior Cameryn Benz being the first back November 29 against Cornell.
"Cam came up big when we needed it and she made some big shots throughout the game," said head coach Sue Troyan. "American's a good defensive team, and I think Cam was definitely a big reason why we were able to break out in the third, but then they started to adjust to her as things went on."
Against the three teams that are ahead of the Mountain Hawks, Lehigh is 0-6, as its been swept by Boston University, Bucknell and now American. Against teams below them, Lehigh is 7-0.
The Mountain Hawks came firing out of the gate, going on a 9-1 to begin play. Grundhoffer gave the Mountain Hawks a boast in the early going, scoring six of the nine points. Buhr chipped in the remaining three with a jumper that drew contact and a successful free throw.
With the exception of Cecily Carl, who scored eight of the 12 American first-quarter points, Lehigh's defense smothered the Eagles.
"We went to zone to keep American off balance. They're so good in what they do in their half-court offense that we didn't want to give them a chance to get comfortable," said Troyan.
It wouldn't be long before the Eagles woke up, using the last four minutes of the fourth to turn the tables on the Mountain Hawks and go on an 11-4 run to bring them within one at the end of the first quarter.
After a second quarter that saw American go up 22-17, the Mountain Hawks rallied behind Buhr's 11-point quarter that included a perfect 5-for-5 shooting performance to move in front of the Eagles by two. Grundhoffer, senior Hailey Pascoe and junior Hannah Hedstrom combined for seven points for an 18-point quarter.
Lehigh continued to push forward in the fourth, going up by seven points with 3:43 remaining before American would start to chip into the Mountain Hawk's lead. Taking full advantage of their appearances to the charity stripe, the Eagles connected on 13-of-15 free throws in the fourth quarter alone compared to the 4-of-6 made free throws by Lehigh.
In the final minute of play alone, the score was tied twice and the lead changed hands three times between the Eagles and Mountain Hawks. Although getting the score down to one thanks to a jumper from sophomore Mary Clougherty, American would convert a pair of free throws in the final five seconds to ice the game.
The Mountain Hawks will venture to Colgate next in hopes of breaking up their three-game losing skid. Unlike the previous stretch that saw Lehigh lose to Boston University, Bucknell and American, all three losses this time around have come by five or fewer points.
"Sometimes it easier to be defeated by 15 or 20 and then replay the game play-by-play. These are all games where we've had a chance to win, and the difference is making plays," said Troyan. When you look at teams like Bucknell and American, they're teams with veteran seniors that played with each other and used to making big plays down the stretch, and that's something we have yet to do."
Lehigh returns to Stabler Arena on February 23 to host the Army West Point Black Knights as part of Legends Weekend where the Mountain Hawks will honor Erica Prosser.
