Mountain Hawks Look To Sink Navy For The Second Time This Season
2/1/2019 1:30:00 PM | Women's Basketball
In their most recent contest, the Mountain Hawks defeated Loyola (Md.) 51-42 to move to 14-6 overall and 6-3 in league play. Against the Greyhounds, Senior Hailey Pascoe carried the team for chunks of the game, setting a new career high in scoring with 26 points on the night. Pascoe's 26 points were the second 20+ scoring night of her career, with the first such coming at Boston U. this season. Junior Cameryn Benz was the first player for Lehigh this season to record 20+ points, and that was against Cornell back on November 29.
So far this season, Lehigh has held its opponents to a shooting percentage of 40 or less 14 times this season, winning 13 of those 14 games. The Mountain Hawks have also held opponents below 30 percent four times this year.
Freshman Clair Steele saw extended minutes during the first meeting between these teams and used the extra playing time to lead the Mountain Hawks in scoring with 14 points. Lehigh's defense was on point against the Midshipmen, limiting Navy to just 25 percent shooting from the field. Navy was also held below 20 points in the first half, something the Mountain Hawks have now done in back-to-back games and six times on the season. To add to being held to less than 20 points in the first half, the Midshipmen only recorded two points in the first quarter.
The Midshipmen come into this contest 8-11 and 3-6 in the Patriot League this season. Currently in the middle of a four-game losing streak, Navy has lost to Army, Lafayette, Boston U. and Bucknell in that span. Before the four consecutive defeats, the Midshipmen were riding a two-game winning streak. Against Bucknell, the top team in the Patriot League with a sub 60 RPI, Navy was sunk to the tune of a 77-43 defeat. Jennifer Coleman recorded a double-double as she scored 12 points and hauled in 14 rebounds. Kolbi Green was the only other player for Navy to record double figures in scoring with 11 points. Coleman continues to play a major role for the Midshipmen, leading Navy in points per game (12.1), assists per game (2.5) and rebounds per game (8.0). Bianca Roach is the leader in steals per game (2.0) and minutes played per game (28.0).
The all-time series sees Navy holding a 33-29 advantage over the Mountain Hawks, with three of the last five meetings going to the Midshipmen. Head coach Sue Troyan is an even 25-25 against Navy in her 24 seasons at the helm.
