BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's swimming and diving team will welcome in rival Lafayette to Jacobs Pool on Friday at 6:00 p.m. The Mountain Hawks will honor their five seniors prior to the start of competition.
Last time out, the Brown and White edged by the Loyola Greyhounds on the last event to eclipse a win, 147.5-146.5. The exciting contest went back-and-forth and the Mountain Hawks rose to the occasion and came away with a victory. Lehigh won eight of the 16 events, led by senior Walker Wilson's three individual wins and relay victory.
The win was mighty important for Lehigh, as they had a month off until its next chance at competition against Lafayette. Now, instead of going to into a long break with a tough loss, the Mountain Hawks were energized the past three weeks and used the exciting win as motivation in practices.
"That Loyola win was a such a hard-fought race," claimed head coach Rob Herb. "It was so exciting, a great environment for college swimming and we're going to build off that."
With the win, Lehigh is now 4-1 on the season and are quietly starting to turn heads. Coming into the season, the Mountain Hawks weren't talked about much, but the dedication and talent of the men in the water have proven people wrong.
Leading the way for Lehigh this season has been the excellent performance from the senior Wilson, experienced talents in Joe Huber, Tyler Christ, Collin Hanlon and Greg Giannella. Add in rising sophomores Glenn Lasco, Connor Sept and Owen Thomas, plus talented freshmen Andrew Sukach, Caleb Eberly and Nick Lynam, Lehigh is building something bright.
"Our men are extremely focused," Herb stated. "They work so hard and it's a pleasure coaching this group. In our practices since Loyola, we've been focusing a lot on increasing speed. We want to be a little faster at the start of our races."
On Friday, the Mountain Hawks will look to their 28th straight against their crosstown rival Lafayette. Last year, the Brown and White dominated the Leopards with a 202-80 stomping.
"This Lafayette program is much improved," added Herb. "I expect a tough bout, but as long as we do what's best for the team, support and cheer on each other, bring energy and passion and race hard, I expect a performance from us."
Up next, the Mountain Hawks will compete at the Rutgers Invitational. The four-day event will start on Wednesday, December 4.
