BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Just two more games remain on the regular season schedule for the Lehigh men's soccer team, as the Mountain Hawks head back on the road for the last time to take on Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass. Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. For Lehigh, a first round bye is on the line with a win on Saturday, clinching one of the top two seeds for the upcoming Patriot League Tournament. The Mountain Hawks (10-4-1, 5-0-2 PL) have shut out four straight league opponents dating back to a 0-0 draw against Army West Point back on Oct. 5. Lehigh has outscored Patriot League opponents 11-4 so far in 2019.
The Mountain Hawks are coming off a key 1-0 victory over Rutgers to conclude non-league play for the 2019 season on Tuesday night at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Sophomore Patrick Adams scored his first collegiate goal in the 72nd minute, a header off a corner kick assist from Michael Tahiru. The win improves Lehigh's record over Big Ten opponents this season to 2-1.
Heading into the final week of games, the team's and Patriot League's leading goal-scorer, Josh Luchini is looking to continue his success over the final two regular season contests of the year. He has registered 21 points on 10 goals and one assist. His 21 points rank second behind Loyola's Brian Saramago (22). Junior midfielder Trevor Koski and fifth-year midfielder Alex Greene remain tied for the top spot on the roster in assists with four each, while Tahiru's assist against the Scarlet Knights Tuesday was his third of the season.
The Mountain Hawks have scored 20 goals this season, averaging 1.25 goals per game while tallying 11.9 shots per contest. Of the team's 190 total shots this season, 76 have been on goal for a percentage of .400.
Lehigh's bread-and-butter this year has been its defense, holding opponents to a 0.88 goals against average and a shot percentage of .072. The defense has been anchored by senior Zarin Tuten and junior Tyler Dressman, along with a combination of underclassmen including Justin Scharf, Nick Jennings, Andrew White and Euan Forrest.
Senior goalkeeper has continued his reign as not only one of the best goalkeepers in the Patriot League this season, but one of the best keepers of all-time, as he picked up career shutout No. 23 on Tuesday against Rutgers. That number is good for second in program history and fifth all-time in league history, just four away from tying the all-time record of 27, set by Bucknell's Adam Edwards (2002-05). On the season, Smith has eight clean sheets, second in the Patriot League behind Navy's Ian Bramblett (9).
Smith has played brilliantly in net as of late, shutting out the last four Patriot League opponents and has a shutout streak of 380 straight minutes without giving up a goal.
Lehigh's opponent on Saturday, Holy Cross has struggled to find much success this season and is looking for its second Patriot League victory of the season. The Crusaders have been outscored 19-3 over their last four games, most recently falling to Loyola, 8-1 last weekend and 6-1 to Army West Point on Oct. 20. Most notably, Holy Cross is 0-8 on its home turf this season. Max Krause and Dylan Scanley both lead the team with five goals each this year with Krause also adding four assists for 14 points to pace the Crusaders. 18 of Krause's 35 shots have been on goal for a mark of .514.
Bobby Hurstak has seen the bulk of his time starting in net for Holy Cross, appearing in 15 games, making 14 starts at goalkeeper. He has a GAA of 3.07 and a save percentage of .505 with one shutout.
The Crusaders are averaging 0.94 goals per game this season and have allowed 3.06 goals per game against their opponents. Holy Cross has just managed to attempt 7.6 shots per contest with a shot percentage of .123.
The all-time series between the two teams is tied at 13-13-6 with the Mountain Hawks coming out on top, 3-1 last year at the Ulrich Sports Complex to conclude the regular season. In a remarkable swan song-type performance, Mark Forrest tallied a hat-trick to finish his legendary career with 41 career goals and 103 career points.
Saturday's match will be streamed live on the Patriot League Network with coverage beginning at 1 p.m.
