Early push leads Cornell past Lehigh, 4-0

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Lehigh field hockey team fell into an early 3-0 hole on Wednesday and even though the Mountain Hawks created consistent pressure, they couldn't get one past Cornell goalkeeper Maddie Henry in a 4-0 defeat. Lehigh finished with a 7-5 edge in penalty corners, but struggled to turn the chances into opportunities, being outshot 25-6.
"We knew today was going ot be tough for a few reasons," said associate head coach Taylor Dyer. "We're not used to traveling mid-week, this is our third game in six days and we were shifting some people into new positions. We've been struggling to come out strong in a lot of our games recently, which has put us in tough positions, and this game was no exception with the three first-quarter goals we allowed."
The Big Red fired the game's first 10 shots, turning three of them into the goals as a Natalie Stone score with less than three minutes remaining in the first gave then a 3-0 advantage.
The Mountain Hawks began turning things around late in the quarter, as freshman Anna Piecuch fired a shot on goal in the final seconds. Lehigh followed with two of the first three second-quarter shots, while holding strong defensively. Freshman Maddie Kahn made a pair of saves in the final seconds of the half to keep the Mountain Hawks within three after 30 minutes of play.
Cornell added an insurance goal 3:10 into the second half to account for the game's final scoring.
Kahn finished the afternoon with eight saves for Lehigh while Henry made three in 52:26 of action.
The Mountain Hawks remain on the road Sunday at La Salle. Gametime is set for 12 p.m.
"We are proud that we were able to create chances, but today, we were lacking the competitive mentality," said Dyer. "We're looking forward to taking some time to rest and bring a better game against La Salle."
