Slow start hurts Mountain Hawks in 3-2 defeat at soggy La Salle

10/27/2019 4:05:00 PM | Field Hockey

PHILADELPHIA – La Salle jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead just 3:32 into the game and the Lehigh field hockey team battled back to give itself a chance, but ultimately fell a little short, 3-2 on a rainy Sunday afternoon in Philadelphia. Junior Drew Pecora and senior Amanda Boyer scored goals for the Mountain Hawks, Pecora's being her 12th of the season to pull within one of the program's single-season record.

"Our struggles continue to stem from slow starts," said associate head coach Taylor Dyer. "Other teams are able to get ahead early, which puts us in a tough position for the rest of the game. I felt we performed quite well for different stretches throughout the game, but we still need to work on putting a full 60 minutes of strong hockey together."

La Salle quickly got on the board with goal at the 2:08 and 3:32 marks but Lehigh responded. Less than a minute later, freshman Sydney White nearly scored her first-career goal off a penalty corner, but La Salle's Rialee Allen made a defensive save. A few minutes later, Pecora got one past goalkeeper Emma Provost off a rebound to pull within 2-1 midway through the first quarter.

That score stood until the third when La Salle scored off a corner at the 34:23 mark. The Mountain Hawks again answered as Boyer scored her second goal of the season at 39:21 to pull within 3-2.

Looking to pull even in the fourth, Lehigh struggled to generate many chances. Sophomore Olivia Perrone fired the Mountain Hawks' only shot of the stanza, which was saved at the 55:59 mark. Defensively, freshman Maddie Kahn made a pair of saves while junior Lenke Havas made a defensive save off a penalty corner, to give Lehigh a chance right until the final whistle.

Final shots were 13-8 in favor of La Salle while the Explorers held a 9-6 edge in penalty corners. Kahn finished with four saves.

"I was generally proud of how the team battled today and we're going to focus on bringing that grittiness into the week, so we can have a strong end to our season," said Dyer.

The Mountain Hawks will now return home to host Saint Louis on Friday (3 p.m.) and Boston University on Saturday (11 a.m.) on Senior Day, as Boyer will be honored prior to the game.
