Four different goal scorers and strong defense lead Lehigh past Saint Louis, 4-0

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh field hockey team exploded for three fourth-quarter goals to turn a slim 1-0 advantage into a 4-0 victory over visiting Saint Louis on Friday. Junior Anna Lehman opened the scoring in the first half while sophomore Sarah Bonthuis, junior Drew Pecora and freshman MJ Schwab scored less than 10 minutes from each other in the fourth. Pecora's goal was her 13th of the season to tie the program's single-season record, while Schwab's tally marked the first of her career.
"We were doing really great things throughout the whole game," said Lehigh associate head coach Taylor Dyer. "We were possessing and transitioning the ball well, looking to create some good counterattack opportunities. We had plenty of opportunities throughout the whole game, but I thought the team brought a different mentality in the fourth to make sure we capitalized on our chances and sent some rebounds back into the cage."
The 4-0 win marked Lehigh's largest shutout victory in more than three years (October of 2016).
A defensive battle in the first half saw Lehigh hold a 7-1 edge in shots, but quality chances were at a premium. The Mountain Hawks converted one of those opportunities midway through the second quarter as junior Maddie Monahan fired the ball into the circle. That's where Lehman made the deflection past Saint Louis goalkeeper Sasha Sander at the 22:19 mark.
Lehigh again held the shots edge in the third, 5-1, but only one was on goal. That changed in the fourth as Bonthuis put home a rebound at the 46:47 mark. Less than three minutes later, Pecora's initial shot was saved, but she promptly put the rebound past Sander for a 3-0 advantage.
Schwab rounded out the scoring at 56:30. Off a corner, senior Lenke Havas fired towards the back post where sophomore Leah Mullery made a deflection towards Schwab, who gave Lehigh a 4-0 lead, which proved to be the final.
"MJ has been doing great things over the past couple months and it was great to see her score that goal," said Dyer. "Drew of course has done so much for us on both sides of the ball. She creates so much attack for us. Finishing in front of the goal has been a strength of hers all season and something that we've definitely relied on her for. It was awesome to see her tie that record today."
Final shots were 19-4 in favor of Lehigh while the Mountain Hawks held an 8-1 edge in penalty corners. Freshman goalkeeper Maddie Kahn posted three saves.
Lehigh now turns its attention to Saturday's Senior Day Game as the Mountain Hawks will host Patriot League foe Boston University at 11 a.m. Prior to the game, senior Amanda Boyer will be recognized for her four years of hard work and dedication to the program.
"We'll be sad at the end of the game when we realize it's our last game with her, but she's dedicated so much to this program over the last four years and we're so excited to celebrate her and all that she's given and accomplished," said Dyer.
