Â
"It was a very fast-paced, back-and-forth game," said associate head coach Taylor Dyer. "We made some really nice adjustments. In the first half, we were outplayed a little bit, then we were able to take a little control back in the second half and give ourselves a lot of opportunities. We just struggled to convert, especially in those pressure situations near the end of the game as time was winding down."
Â
The Pioneers opened by outshooting Lehigh 3-2 in the first quarter. All three shots (and both of their first-quarter corners) came in the game's first 2:30, but the Mountain Hawks rebounded nicely over the latter stages of the stanza.
Â
The second quarter saw the Mountain Hawks increase the pressure, firing nine shots (to Sacred Heart's eight). Midway through the period, Lehigh had a couple glittering opportunities. First, junior Maddie Monahan completed a long pass from behind midfield to freshman Sarah Bonthuis full steam towards goal, but the ensuing shot was wide. Less than 30 seconds later, junior Drew Pecora had a tremendous chance from in close, but Sacred Heart goalkeeper Hailey Power came up big.
Â
The Pioneers opened the scoring at the 25:11 mark. It was almost more, but freshman goalkeeper Maddie Kahn made two athletic stops in the final seconds of the second quarter to keep the deficit at one.

Sacred Heart doubled its lead just 3:30 into the third quarter, but it took the Mountain Hawks only 15 seconds to answer. Bonthuis made a move near the end line and fed Gatto in front, who did the rest for her first-career goal.

"Abe was wonderful today," said Dyer. "She missed the last four games to injury and I know she's been itching to get back. It's nice to see she didn't miss a beat when she was out. She has done really well for us on multiple lines and she contributed to the game in a lot of other positive ways."
Â
A little over six minutes later, the Pioneers turned a transition opportunity into a 3-1 advantage at the 39:56 mark. Lehigh responded with the next eight shots of the contest, with the eighth beating Sacred Heart's second-half goalkeeper Alyssa Stevens for the second time. It was junior Lenke Havas, who scored off a penalty corner to pull Lehigh within 3-2 at 41:51.

The Mountain Hawks continued the pressure in the fourth quarter, outshooting Sacred Heart 4-2 in the stanza while creating four corners to Sacred Heart's one. Lehigh made a late charge with two corners in the final minute, but the Mountain Hawks' last shot, and chance, of the game was blocked by a Pioneers' defender.
Â
Along with the shots advantage, Lehigh finished with a 16-9 edge in penalty corners. Kahn made seven saves while sophomore Leah Mullery also made a big defensive save late in the fourth quarter. A pair of Sacred Heart goalkeepers combined for 15 stops.
Â
"We have been going through some struggles lately, but we were fighting until the end," said Dyer. "We were trying to create opportunities for ourselves until the last minute of the game. The effort, the fight and the relentless was there. Now, it's just finding that missing piece so we can finish and change some of the end results of these games."
