BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh field hockey team hits the road for a rare midweek contest when it travels to Cornell on Wednesday to face the Big Red. Gametime is set for 4 p.m. on ESPN+ (subscription required). The Mountain Hawks have struggled as of late, dropping eight straight contests, but four have been one-goal defeats – including both games this past weekend. Most recently, Lehigh dropped a back-and-forth 3-2 final at Sacred Heart despite holding a 28-18 edge in shots and 16-9 advantage in penalty corners.
Â
The Mountain Hawks had the better of the chances on Sunday, but a pair of Pioneers' goalkeepers combined for 15 saves while two defenders made defensive stops. Twice in the third quarter, Sacred Heart opened two-goal leads, but each time, Lehigh answered right back to get back within one. The Mountain Hawks' first goal was scored by freshman Abriana Gatto, marking her first-career point. The goal was assisted by classmate Sarah Bonthuis. Junior Lenke Havas scored Lehigh's second goal off a penalty corner while freshman Maddie Kahn made seven saves. Kahn finished the weekend with 19 stops after stopping 12-of-13 sent her way against Lafayette Friday. Sophomore Leah Mullery also enjoyed a strong weekend, recording a defensive save against both Lafayette and Sacred Heart.
Â
Lehigh has four games remaining, two more on the road over the next week – at Cornell (Wednesday) and La Salle (Sunday) – before returning home for a pair the first weekend of November, hosting Saint Louis and Boston University. The Mountain Hawks are still playing for a lot and with two or more victories over their last four, they would finish the season with the program's most wins since 2007.
Â
Cornell enters Saturday with a 7-5 record coming off a pair of losses over the weekend, both against nationally-ranked teams. It fell 2-0 against No. 14 Harvard Saturday and 5-0 at No. 22 Albany Sunday. The Big Red have been ranked this season themselves, most recently coming in at No. 24 in the Oct. 8 poll. Standing 2-2 in Ivy League play, Grace Royer leads the team in goals (5), assists (4) and points (14). Claire Jones also owns double-figure points with 11 via four goals and three assists, including a team-high 42 shots and 26 shots on goal. Maddie Henry has started all 12 games in goal, tallying a 1.89 goals against average and 75.0 save percentage.
Â
Cornell is 25-1-1 all-time vs. Lehigh with Lehigh's only winning coming in 1993, during the third-ever meeting between the sides. Last season, the teams played at Lehigh with the Big Red picking up a 2-0 victory.
Â
After Wednesday's game, the Mountain Hawks remain on the road Sunday at La Salle. Gametime is set for 12 p.m.
