Lehigh hits the road for EIWA duals at American, Navy

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – A second consecutive weekend featuring two EIWA duals awaits the Mountain Hawks. After defeating Bucknell and Cornell at home last weekend, Lehigh takes to the road for EIWA duals against American and Navy.

The Mountain Hawks have won their last three duals, including their first home win over Cornell since 2011, after starting the season 0-7, with all seven losses coming against teams currently ranked in the NWCA top 25. Lehigh got five bonus wins, including three falls, in a 34-12 win over Bucknell on January 11, then topped Cornell behind senior Cortlandt Schuyler's 3-1 sudden victory win over Jonathan Furnas at 149 in the final bout of the dual.

In its first home action in nearly six weeks, Lehigh won EIWA duals versus Bucknell and No. 7 Cornell last weekend to extend its dual winning streak to three. The Mountain Hawks had three falls and five bonus wins in a 34-12 triumph over the Bison. Senior Cortlandt Schuyler's sudden victory win in the final bout at 149 gave Lehigh a 19-16 win over the Big Red. The win over Cornell was Lehigh's second in the last four meetings in the series and the first at home since the Mountain Hawks toppled the then No. 1-ranked Big Red at Stabler Arena in January 2011. Schuyler enjoyed a 2-0 weekend as did senior Gordon Wolf, junior Jordan Kutler and sophomore Jordan Wood. Kutler won both of his matches by major decision. He has now won four straight bouts and has scored bonus points in all four wins, including a pin and three straight major decisions.

Lehigh wrestlers enjoyed another strong fall semester in the classroom, with 22 Mountain Hawks posting a grade point average of 3.2 or better last semester. Junior Andrew Price led the way for the Mountain Hawks with a 3.95 GPA in mechanical engineering, one of three Lehigh wrestlers to post a 3.9 or better in the fall. Junior David Pipa (Behavioral Neuroscience) and freshman Andrew Shedleski (Engineering) also hit or exceeded the 3.9 mark. Junior Chase Gallik leads Lehigh with a 3.90 cumulative GPA, majoring in civil engineering. Eleven of the 22 Mountain Hawks to post a 3.2 or better in the fall have competed in a dual meet this season, a list that includes Price, Gallik, Josh Humphreys, Jordan Kutler, Brandon Paetzell, Ryan Pomrinca, Ryan Preisch, Luke Resnick, Cortlandt Schuyler, Gordon Wolf and Jordan Wood.

American competed in seven tournaments throughout the fall semester and opened 2019 with five duals. The Eagles are 2-3 in dual competition, dropping three duals to Army West Point, North Carolina and Wyoming at the Cowboy Shootout to open the new year and defeating Columbia and Hofstra at home last weekend. American finished sixth at last year's EIWA Tournament. No Eagles appear in the latest InterMat rankings, but American's top wrestler is likely Josh Terao, a former EIWA finalist, who is ranked at 133 by W.I.N. Magazine and TrackWrestling. Teague Moore is in his eighth season as American's head coach.

Navy enters this weekend's action at 3-1 in duals. The Midshipmen opened their season with a loss to Ohio State then spent considerable time on the tournament circuit, highlighted by the Navy Classic, Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational and Southern Scuffle. Navy's dual wins have come against Maryland, Bucknell and most recently, Hofstra, who the Mids defeated 30-12 at home last weekend. Navy's projected lineup features a trio of top 20 wrestlers led by senior Nicholas Gil, who is ranked 17th at 141. Also ranked for the Mids are junior Jared Prince at 149 and junior Spencer Carey at 174. Navy finished fifth at last year's EIWA Championship. Gil and Prince are returning NCAA qualifiers. Joel Sharratt is in his fifth season as Navy's head coach.

The Mountain Hawks have won all eight previous duals with American by an average score of 30.3-10.6. Lehigh visits American for the fourth time (Dec. '07, Jan. '13 and Jan. '17). Navy is Lehigh's second most-often wrestled opponent behind Penn State. These teams will meet for the 99th time with Lehigh having won the last seven duals to take the lead in the all-time series for the first time.

Saturday's dual versus American begins at 7:30 p.m. from Bender Arena in Washington, D.C., while Sunday's dual versus Navy begins at 2 p.m. from Alumni Hall in Annapolis, Md. Both duals will be broadcast on the Patriot League Network. The Navy match will be broadcast on Stadium OTA and on Facebook in addition to the normal PLN coverage. Audio for both duals will be available on WLVR-FM (91.3) and WLVR.org with coverage beginning 15 minutes prior to match time.

Lehigh returns to Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall next weekend to host a pair of nationally-ranked out of conference foes. The Mountain Hawks will host No. 21 Arizona State on Saturday, January 26 at 7 p.m. and will host No. 13 Virginia Tech the following afternoon at 2 p.m. The two-match home stand will be followed by a trip to Oklahoma for duals at Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, February 2-3.
