Lehigh wraps up successful day at Lehigh Invitational

QUAKERTOWN, Pa. – The Lehigh rowing team kicked off the 2018-19 season on Saturday with a successful day against strong competition at the Lehigh Invitational. The day featured two races, women's and men's eights, highlighted by the Mountain Hawks' women's "B" boat finishing in first against a field of Saint Joseph's and Jefferson. Lehigh featured two of the top three women's finishers while the men showed impressive strides against a strong Temple team.
Â
"I thought we raced fantastically, especially for our first race and in comparison to last year at the same regatta," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "We performed at or above our expectations, which is great to see at this point in the year. The other nice thing was we were able to take our performance from last year and improve upon it as a team. The women's side absolutely crushed it. That's a huge starting point for us, especially since we haven't had any real practice in these lineups because of weather and illness this week."
Â
All boats that raced in the Lehigh Invitational were eights, except the Lehigh's men's "C" boat (which was a four). On the women's side, Lehigh's boats finished first, third and seventh, respectively. Saint Joseph's came in second and fourth while Jefferson placed fifth and sixth.
Â
On the men's side, Temple finished first through fourth, but the Mountain Hawks showed drastic improvements against a strong opponent.
Â
"The men showed a significant improvement compared to last year against Dad Vail champion Temple," said Conley. "Temple is a very tough team in general and to have that kind of improvement against them just says a lot about the character of the men's team and what we're trying to do."
Â
The Mountain Hawks will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 13 at Navy Day on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.
"I'm excited about the overall year and where this group wants to take the team," said Conley. "Now it's in their hands as to where we go the rest of the season. There's a lot of season to go. We're excited about the future."
