Mountain Hawks enjoy success at Navy Day Regatta
10/13/2018 4:23:00 PM | Men's Rowing, Women's Rowing
PHILADELPHIA  – The Lehigh rowing team finished off a successful day at the Navy Day Regatta Saturday on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. In the end, a number of Mountain Hawk crews finished near the top of their respective races, with most finishing in the top half of a competitive field of rowing programs.
Â
"Overall, we had a comparable day to last year at this point in the season, and we had a fantastic effort last year, so I think that bodes well for the spring," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "But we definitely have some work to do before we get to the spring."
Â
A pair of Women's Open 2 crews began the day for Lehigh by finishing third and fourth, respectively, out of eight. The Men's Open/Collegiate 4+ followed by placing 11th (out of 31 crews) before the Women's Open/Collegiate 4+ came in 14th (out of 34).
Â
Among Lehigh's other top finishers was the Women's Open/Collegiate 8+ which saw its "A" crew finish 14th out of 26 crews with a time of 14:37.16.
Â
"We had a lot of different entries today and people raced multiple times, but the effort displayed was awesome," said Conley. "The boats that we're training for Head of the Charles, the men's four, the women's four and women's eight, all three of them performed pretty well. We're excited about what they can do. With those three boats racing next week, I'm hoping we'll do pretty well."
Â
In the end, it was a successful October race for the Mountain Hawks, who look to use the fall season to create a building block for success in the spring.
Â
"What we learned today is that our system is working," said Conley. "It's allowing us to do what we need to and we're hoping to get more and more buy-in, but it's hard to know that in the moment. Results are going to help us do just that."
Â
The Mountain Hawks return to action next weekend when they travel to the historic Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, beginning on Saturday.
