Mountain Hawks set for Head of the Charles this weekend

10/19/2018 11:00:00 AM | Men's Rowing, Women's Rowing

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Three crews from Lehigh rowing are set to compete at the Head of the Charles this weekend, beginning on Saturday. The women's four, women's eight and men's four are all set to compete in the largest two-day regatta in the world. The women will race on Saturday afternoon while the men are set to race Sunday at 2:55 p.m. Last year, the men's four finished ninth, guaranteeing itself an entry into this year's regatta by finishing in the top 50 percent of the field.  The women's eight and four missed guaranteeing themselves an entry, finishing just out of the top half of the field.

"The Head of the Charles is the premier fall regatta in rowing," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "It is three miles of turns and bridges that challenge the crew in all facets, power, speed, toughness and focus within the shell. We take the athletes that have demonstrated they worked out over the summer by having the better of the erg scores. If the team wants to do well, they will have to come together quickly as a crew and make changes to overcome technical adversities."

In the sport of rowing, crews must be ready to overcome anything thrown their way at any time. Conley and the coaching staff consistently challenge the Mountain Hawks at practice, to ultimately help them prepare for a course like this weekend.

"You never know how ready a crew is until you see them on the course," said Conley. "We've made things chaotic in the fall for the purpose of them being able to handle tough situations on the fly. I think if anything happens they weren't expecting, that the crews will do well. Now, they just have to execute."

So far this fall, the Mountain Hawks have put forth solid efforts at the Lehigh Invitational then Navy Day. After last season's success and a strong summer, Lehigh enters 2018-19 with a stronger starting point than years past.

"Right now, the fall is comparable to last year, if not better," said Conley. "We have a larger team and are beating or competing against really solid teams. I like where the team is headed and we know we have more to find."

This weekend may be a more high-profile race, but it's just another opportunity for the Mountain Hawks to get better.

"Goals of the crews are simple," said Conley. "Race our best race. This means attack from stroke one until we can't attack any more.

"Success at the Charles is defined by a hard line of either qualifying for the next year with a top 50 percent finish of the event or not," Conley continued. "For us, it's no different, with an added piece of giving everything we have."

After this weekend's Head of the Charles, the Mountain Hawks wrap up the fall next Saturday (Oct. 27) for Class Day on the Lehigh River in Allentown, Pa.
