Lehigh returns to fall action at Navy Day Saturday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Following a successful Lehigh Invitational in late September, the Lehigh rowing team hits the water this Saturday at Navy Day on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. The first race is scheduled for 9:40 a.m. On Sept. 29, the Mountain Hawk women featured two of the top three finishers in a race which also included Saint Joseph's and Jefferson. Lehigh looks to carry the momentum from that day, and the ensuing two weeks of practice, into Saturday's regatta.

"We have been focusing on really elevating our level of effort within each stroke, piece and practice that we do," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "It is incredibly difficult the level of effort we need to do to be competitive, but I believe this team has shown they are willing to try to be there as often as possible."

The primary focus of the Lehigh Invitational was to get everyone's feet wet and get a first look at the team against outside competition. Now, the focus begins to shift. Saturday is another opportunity to build chemistry, and get better.

"Now we start to focus more on mental toughness," said Conley. "Navy Day is a time trial regatta, so everything is very much within the crew with limited outside distractions."

With a time trial, each crew is sent across the start line in 10-second increments, which brings a different dynamic.

"This kind of racing is about maintaining your composure and taking other crews out of their race plans," said Conley. "It elevates the level of trust between the rowers and coxswains because the coxswains can see the crews in front of them while the rowers can only see who is behind them. It is mentally challenging, and features three miles of maximum effort.

"Time trials are about integrity towards your goals and whether or not you did the best you could on that day," Conley continued. "The results will fall where they will. It will give us a good understanding of where our competition is during the fall season, so we can train specifically during the winter for the spring."

This weekend, the team will gain valuable experience. The Mountain Hawks will be put in challenging situations, and Conley is excited to see how they respond.

"The majority of the rowers will race multiple times within the regatta, which will be very taxing on them physically and mentally," said Conley. "I would love to see our team improve on the results from last weekend, but the overall goal of the program is really about gaining the race experience. We want to see the other crews and how they prepare, and learn from it – what makes us a better team than others and where can we improve our own race day experience and performance."

Following Saturday's regatta, Lehigh will head to the historic Head of the Charles next weekend in Boston.
