Following this important event for the future of many Lehigh student athletes, Leary's 2018 recruiting class was recognized by nationally renowned baseball magazine, Baseball America and writer Teddy Cahill in his latest article "Under the Radar 2018 Recruiting Classes."
Â
Cahill talked highly about the Mountain Hawks' incoming class of pitchers and some position players that were touted as a nationally recognized recruiting class, as well as current players that are potential draft candidates.
Â
Â"Lehigh this year has a pair of intriguing draft prospects in righthanders Jason Reynolds and Levi Stoudt. The Mountain Hawks also have a pair of exciting freshmen pitchers in Mason Black and lefthander Luke Rettig, both of whom headline what may be the program's best recruiting class in head coach Sean Leary's 24-year tenure. Black has a physical frame and was running his fastball up to 93-94 mph by the end of the spring, when he helped his team to a runner-up finish in the Pennsylvania state tournament. Rettig has a long, loose frame, a good three-pitch mix and pitchability."
Â
"Third baseman Gerard Sweeney is a switch-hitter who has a good feel for hitting from both sides of the plate. He figures to take over at third base and step right into the top half of the lineup. Casey Rother has two-way ability as a catcher and righthander. It's a difficult double to pull, but he has some pop at the plate and can run his fastball up to 90-91 mph in short stints. Chase Carlson is a speedy middle infielder whose contact skills and defense give him a chance to quickly work his way into the lineup."
Cahill's praise of the incoming Mountain Hawks is a really good sign of things to come for the program. Leary is excited to see his team grow and get to the next level, especially with this elite group of incoming freshman that can help the team compete right away.
Â
"Obviously, we are extremely excited to have a national recognized recruiting class," said Leary. "Our coaching staff worked hard and I applaud them for their collective efforts. Â
Â
"As a staff, we strongly believe the new complex of J. David Walker Field and the other significant program enhancements have allowed us the opportunity to land this type of class and we thank our administration for their confidence in us."
Â
"This class has immediate impact players and strong depth," Leary said. "We can see key weekend innings from the group of arms while several position players will be pushing for starting positions. It will be exciting to see these young men develop over the Lehigh careers."
