BALTIMORE - No. 10 Navy scored two goals in the game's first 48 seconds and wouldn't look back, downing the Lehigh women's lacrosse team, 20-5 in the Patriot League Semifinals Friday at Loyola's Ridley Athletic Complex. The loss snaps Lehigh's seven-game winning streak as the Mountain Hawks finished their season with a 13-6 record, tied for the second most wins in school history. Junior Mary Ellen Carron led the offense with a goal and assist while senior Kayleen Kelly recorded four draw controls, two groundballs and two caused turnovers.

"They just have so many weapons offensively, three superior players on their attack end that are really hard to slow down," said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. "They generate fast break beautifully off a save. All we could do is battle out there. Unfortunately, they had more speed, which shows up over the course of a game."

Along with Carron's two points, juniors Kellie Gough and Jane Henderson, sophomore Sondra Dickey and freshman Julianne Puckette all scored a goal for the Mountain Hawks. Dickey added four draw controls to finish the season with 81. Both she and Kelly (86) shattered the previous school record for draw controls (47).

Gough scored at the 24:40 mark to pull Lehigh within 3-1, but Navy responded with a 5-0 run to take an 8-1 lead. The teams traded goals over the final 11:17 of the stanza, with Puckette and Carron scoring for Lehigh. Carron's goal came with 16 seconds on the clock to pull the Mountain Hawks within 10-3 after 30 minutes of play.

Navy erased any doubt by beginning the second half with four straight goals and eight of the first nine. Dickey finished a feed from sophomore Christine Balestra at the 9:18 mark to round out the scoring for Lehigh.

Final shots were 32-17 in favor of Navy while the Midshipmen held a 12-6 edge in groundballs and 18-8 advantage in draw controls. Sophomore Samantha Sagi made one save before being relieved by freshman Claudia Hanover, who tallied four stops in a career-high 49:01.

Despite losing three starters to season-ending injuries, the Mountain Hawks won 12 or more games for a third straight season, winning a Patriot League Tournament game and reaching the semifinals for the third time in as many years. Lehigh's seven league victories were a school record. The Mountain Hawks are 38-17 over the last three seasons.

"I think we had a remarkable year given all of our circumstances," said Redfern. "Games are really tough to win in the Division I world and we came out of a lot of games on the winning side. We managed to do that, with whatever players that were on the field for us, representing Lehigh very well."
