The 27 runs scored is the most by a Lehigh (19-26) team since scoring 28 runs in a 28-3 victory over Moravian on March 30, 2006. The Mountain Hawks also recorded 17 hits on Wednesday, matching their season-high set in the first meeting with the Peacocks (0-35) who have now lost 74-straight games.
The Mountain Hawks had a lot of pop in the bats on Wednesday as 13 of their 17 hits were doubles. It is the highest-single game total since recording eight against Scranton in 2012.
Lehigh's 27 RBIs on Wednesday eclipses the previous high of 19 recorded against Norfolk State earlier this season and the 18 walks on the day surpasses the previous high of 10 which was set earlier this year against Saint Peter's. The Mountain Hawks also posted five sacrifice flies on the day, surpassing the previous high of four set against Iona in 2014
Ryan Bonshak and Chris Kersey led the LU offense as each scored five runs on the day (career-highs for both), marking the most runs scored in a single game by one player since Joe Abeln scored five against Scranton in 2012. Ryan Malloy and Matt Hand each scored four runs on the day, which ties a career-high for Malloy and sets a career-high for Hand.
Kersey's performance added to his already impressive resume against Saint Peter's. He finishes his career with a .650 batting average (13-for-20) and 14 runs scored in six-career games against the Peacocks. This season alone he compiled six hits, eight runs and four RBIs against SPU.
Bonshak and James Bleming tied for the most runs accounted for on the day with nine each. In addition to scoring five runs, Bonshak also recorded a career-high four RBIs. Bleming scored three runs while driving in a career-high six runs from the three-hole. The senior shortstop now has 34 RBIs on the season which sets a new career-high and moves him into fourth place in the Patriot League this season. He inches closer to 100 career RBIs with 96 heading into the final weekend of the season.
Lehigh put the game out of reach after scoring a season-high eight runs in the fifth inning. After Jake Kochmansky and Malloy began the inning with back-to-back walks, Blake Rapoport broke open the flood gate with a with a two-run double. The Mountain Hawks then loaded the bases and drew three-straight walks with the bases full. Then, Quinn McKenna and Kochmansky posted back-to-back sacrifice flies as Lehigh batted around. Eric Cichocki got involved in the action with a pinch-hit RBI double for the final run of the inning.
Making his second start against Saint Peter's this season, Peter Woltersdorf produced another strong performance on the mound. The freshman scattered two runs on four hits through 4.0 innings of work while striking out a season-high eight batters with just one walk. Woltersdorf is now 5-0 and leads the staff in wins this season. In two games against the Peacocks, he has allowed just seven runners to reach base with a 1.80 ERA and a .118 opponent batting average in 10.0 innings or work.
Cameron Van Hoorebeke, Matt Svanson and Sam Wurth surrendered just three hits in 3.0 scoreless innings of work. With 11 total strikeouts on the day, the pitching staff reached double-digit strikeouts for the 12th time this season and second time in as many games.
The Mountain Hawks will look to carry the momentum into the final weekend of the season which begins with a doubleheader at Army West Point on Saturday.
