BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's basketball team erased an eight-point fourth-quarter deficit to take a three-point lead, but Army West Point scored nine of the final 14 points in overtime to hand the Mountain Hawks a heartbreaking 62-60 defeat in the Patriot League Quarterfinals Thursday evening in Stabler Arena. Sophomore Gena Grundhoffer led Lehigh's offense with 22 points, her fourth straight game with 20 points, while classmate Camryn Buhr recorded 13 points and 10 boards, good for her sixth double-double of the season. Senior Mae Williams added a career-high eight rebounds. The Mountain Hawks end their season with a 15-15 record.

"Army has been playing well down the stretch and having Murray back in their lineup also helps them," said Lehigh head coach Sue Troyan. "It just gives them another offensive weapon that they didn't have before. I thought honestly, we did a great job on the defensive end of defending them and playing them pretty tough, but we didn't do a great job on the boards."

Trailing by seven heading into the final quarter, Lehigh shot 6-of-9 from the field in the fourth and 8-of-13 from the free throw line, scoring 21 points to force overtime.

Grundhoffer finished 10-of-11 from the free throw line. Senior Quinci Mann posted 14 points on 4-of-8 shooting, including 2-of-4 from three-point range. She finished her career with 199 made three-pointers, good for third in school history. Madison Hovren led Army with 17 points and 12 boards.

Defense was the story in the first half as neither team converted a field goal for more than two minutes, when Grundhoffer converted a layup to give Lehigh a 4-0 lead with 7:35 on the first-quarter clock. Army scored the next four points to even the score at four. The game was also tied at six and eight before a Black Knights' three-point play with 2:45 left in the first helped Army take an 11-10 lead after one quarter of play.

The Mountain Hawks began the second quarter on a 7-0 run behind a Buhr layup, Bernadette Devaney three-pointer and two Grundhoffer free throws, giving Lehigh a 17-11 lead at the 5:47 mark. Army converted a layup with 5:30 remaining to break an 8:15 scoreless drought. The Black Knights went on to post an 8-2 run as a Janae McNeal jumper evened the score at 19 with 1:27 remaining, but a Buhr jumper on the ensuing possession gave Lehigh a 21-19 halftime advantage.

Lehigh shot just 27.8 percent from the field in the first half compared to 30.0 percent for Army. The Mountain Hawks were just 14.3 percent from three-point range while the Black Knights were 0-of-9. Army had six offensive rebounds compared to two for the Mountain Hawks with the Black Knights holding a 9-2 edge in second-chance points.

"They're going to defend you tough," said Troyan. "Give them credit. They took us, in many ways, out of our offensive sets. We didn't get in any rhythm offensively because of the pressure that we saw."

The beginning of the second half saw four lead changes until midway through the third quarter when Army West Point reeled off seven consecutive points capped off by a Hovren jumper to give the Black Knights a 31-26 lead with 3:40 on the clock.

After a Grundhoffer jumper, Army scored four in a row to take a seven-point, 35-28 advantage with just over a minute left in the third. The Black Knights took a 37-30 lead into the fourth quarter.

Early in the fourth, Army opened an eight-point, 41-33 lead, but Lehigh answered with nine of the next 11 points, capped off by a Mann three-pointer and Buhr free throw to pull the Mountain Hawks within 43-42 with 5:48 on the clock.

Less than three minutes later, two Grundhoffer free throws gave Lehigh the lead at 46-45, its first lead since 26-25. The rest of regulation saw four ties and nine lead changes. Three straight Lehigh points gave the Mountain Hawks a three-point lead, but Army's McNeal knocked down a three-pointer to even the score at 51 with 15 seconds remaining to force overtime.

Overtime saw two ties and four lead changes. A 5-0 Lehigh run behind three free throws from Grundhoffer, and a huge block from Williams led to a Mann layup that turned a 53-51 deficit into a 56-53 lead. However, Army tallied eight of the next 10 points to go up by three at 61-58. Grundhoffer converted a layup to pull Lehigh within 61-60 with three seconds remaining, but it proved to be too little, too late.

For the game, the Mountain Hawks shot 41.9 percent from the field (18-of-43), including 21.4 percent from three-point range (3-of-14). Army finished at 36.5 percent (23-of-63) and 16.7 percent from long distance (13-of-18). The Black Knights held a 39-33 edge in rebounds, including 17-7 on the offensive glass.

"When you step back and look at the season, there was a lot of progress made from a year ago to this year," said Troyan. "Give our three seniors a lot of credit for their leadership. We were a much-improved team record-wise, but the thing you don't see is how close every game was that we played. Nine of our 18 league games came down to a possession in the last minute. We were really in every game that we played, and that's progress for us. The next step for us is learning how to win those close games."
