RICHMOND, Va. – Following an early pitchers' dual, the Mountain Hawks fell behind down the stretch as Richmond pulled away to a 7-0 victory on Friday as Lehigh open play at the Spider Invitational.
Peter Moore kept Lehigh (6-10) in the game early before Richmond (9-8) piled up the runs down the stretch. The Lehigh lefty compiled one of his best outings of the season as he tossed 5.1 innings with seven strikeouts, while allowing just four hits and one earned run.
Moore had a no-hitter working through the first three innings and did not allow a ball out the infield until the fifth inning as the first hit he surrendered was a bunt single in the fourth. He finished his outing without allowing a single extra-base on the day.
The Spiders broke the scoreless tie in the fifth with a RBI single. They had a chance to add to the lead with a runner on second with less than two outs, but Moore limited the damage with a strikeout and a fielder's choice to end the inning.
Richmond broke open some breathing room with a three-run fourth inning performance. The Spiders compiled two hits and were aided by four walks and a catcher's interference. Vinny Capra did most of the damage with a single swing as he recorded a three-RBI double with the bases loaded.
After taking the lead, the Spiders turned to the pen and received a very stingy performance from reliever Antonio Balducci. The freshman lefty earned his first-career save as he tossed 3.0 scoreless innings and allowed just one hit with three strikeouts.
Tim Miller gave Richmond a strong start and earned the win as he tossed shutout 6.0 innings with just three hits allowed and four strikeouts.
Tony Gallo and Ryan Malloy each recorded a hit on the day to keep their four-game hit streaks intact. Blake Rapoport also posted a hit as he has a hit in three of his last four games.
The Mountain Hawks will resume play at the Spider Invitational on Saturday as they take on Monmouth at 10 a.m.
