WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Mountain Hawks reached the midway point of their Virginia road trip Wednesday and suffered a 12-2 setback at William & Mary.
William & Mary (6-12) put the pressure on Lehigh (6-9) early with five runs in the first two innings and turned it back up late with five more runs in the final two frames. The Tribe cooled a hot Lehigh offense that had been averaging 13 hits in its previous two games to just three hits on Wednesday night.
Tony Gallo led the team offensively with a 2-for-2 performance and a RBI. The sophomore has been heating up at the plate as he has five hits in the past three games (5-for-10) and has recorded a RBI in three-straight games for a total of five during that span.
The Mountain Hawks ran into some tough luck early as they had runners on third in each of the first two innings, but unfortunate breaks prevented Lehigh from getting any runners home. The Tribe made matters worse as they managed to score three runs in the first and then expanded the lead with two more in the second.
Trailing by seven with plenty of game left to mount a comeback, Lehigh managed to cut into the deficit with a pair of runs in the fifth inning. Gallo came through with a RBI single to score Quinn McKenna who led off with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Later in the inning, Mike Maguire grounded out to second, but allowed Ryan Bonshak to score from third.
The William & Mary bullpen held the Lehigh offense in check for the final four innings as the Tribe allowed just one hit during that span with five strikeouts and no walks.
The Mountain Hawks will look to rebound as they head up the road to Richmond to begin a three-game round robin tournament on Friday at the Spider Invitational. Lehigh will face the host Spiders on Friday at 2 p.m.
