Mountain Hawks unable to climb out of early hole against No. 22 Minnesota

ORLANDO, Fla. – No. 22 Minnesota scored twice in each of the first two innings and while Lehigh eventually settled in, the Mountain Hawks dropped a 5-1 decision in their only game Saturday at the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic. Sophomore Parker Boyd pitched five strong innings in relief but the early four run deficit was too much to overcome against the defending Big Ten champions as Lehigh falls to 1-2 on the season.
The Golden Gophers made Lehigh pay for a two out walk in the top of the first as Sydney Dwyer hit a two home run to right center to give Minnesota a 2-0 lead. Three straight hits to open the second, capped by a two-run double by Makenna Partain doubled the Gophers' advantage.
Carlie Brandt retired the first 11 Mountain Hawks she faced before walking sophomore Mary-Hannah Smith in the fourth inning. A pair of Minnesota errors gave Lehigh two base runners in the fifth but Lehigh was unable to pick up a hit or a run until the sixth.
Junior Nicole Yozzo led off the sixth with a bunt single for Lehigh's first hit and advanced to third following a pair of Minnesota errors. Two batters later, Yozzo scored on a Smith ground out. The Mountain Hawks' only other hit was a sixth-inning single by senior Carolyn Wright.
After junior Emily Sorem gave up four runs on five hits in two innings, Boyd came out of the bullpen to limit Minnesota to just a run on two hits through the final five as the Golden Gophers added a run on a double steal in the top of the seventh. Sorem and Boyd combined to issue six walks, while Boyd recorded Lehigh's only two strikeouts.
Minnesota finished with seven hits, with Partain and Erika Rozell leading the way with two apiece.
The Mountain Hawks will close out the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic with two games on Sunday as Lehigh will face No. 24/RV South Carolina at 9 a.m. and Miami (Ohio) at 11:30 a.m.
