
Mountain Hawks drop two on final day of Citrus Classic

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Lehigh softball team capped its opening weekend of play with a pair of losses Sunday on the final day of the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic. After dropping a 15-0 contest to No. 24 South Carolina in their first game Sunday, the Mountain Hawks were unable to hold on to an early 4-0 lead, ultimately falling 6-5 to Miami (Ohio) on Kat Lee's walk-off single.
Lehigh completes its opening weekend at 1-4.
In its second game of the day Lehigh looked to bounce back from its loss to South Carolina, and started strong, scoring four times in the top of the first inning. Junior Nicole Yozzo singled to lead off the game and promptly stole second. After a single from sophomore Hannah Edwards put runners on the corners, Edwards stole second and Yozzo was called safe at home on an obstruction call to put the Mountain Hawks in front. Edwards scored when senior Carolyn Wright reached on an error, and after a wild pitch and a RBI single by junior Ashley Rabago, the Mountain Hawks had a 4-0 lead.
The Redhawks (3-6) answered with three runs in the bottom the first and added single runs in the second and fourth innings to take a 5-4 lead.
Yozzo and Edwards combined to pull Lehigh even in the top of the fifth as Yozzo reached on an error to lead off the inning, stole second and third base and then scored on an Edwards single. Lehigh loaded the bases with two outs in the inning but was unable to reclaim the lead.
Miami's seventh-inning rally started when Megan Wurts was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. A bunt single, sacrifice and walk loaded the bases before Lee singled home the winning run.
Junior Emily Sorem took the loss for Lehigh, allowing six runs (three earned) on eight hits in 6.1 innings of work. Sorem struck out two, but walked four and hit two batters.
Courtney Vierstra replaced Shannon Hohman after just four batters and limited Lehigh to just an unearned run on seven hits to earn the victory.
Edwards, Wright and Rabago each had three hits against the Redhawks, as Lehigh totaled nine in the contest. Yozzo stole three bases to increase her weekend total to 7-for-7.

Jana Johns went 3-for-3 with a grand slam and 7 RBIs for the Gamecocks, while, Tiara Duffy's pinch-hit grand slam gave South Carolina a 5-0 lead in the second inning. The Gamecocks added a run in the third, four in the fourth and five in the fifth.

Sophomore Parker Boyd started in the circle and was charged with 11 runs in five innings, allowing nine hits while striking out four and walking two.
Next up for the Mountain Hawks will be four games over three days at the Duke Inaugural Tournament, March 2- 4 in Durham, N.C. Lehigh will open with Kent State, Friday, March 2 at 11 a.m.
